Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS
Dr. Perciaccante was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He received both his undergraduate and dental school education at New York University. In 1995, Dr. Perciaccante moved to the Atlanta area to pursue his specialty training at Emory University. Dr. Perciaccante completed an Internship and Residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as a Fellowship in Facial Aesthetic Surgery. After completing his training in 2000, Dr. Perciaccante joined the full-time faculty at Emory University School of Medicine and served as the Residency Program Director and Chief of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital thru 2007. He continues on the part-time faculty at Emory as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgery. He teaches and supervises the residents at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Dr. Perciaccante is President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) is a Diplomate of both the ABOMS and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He has served on the Examination Committee of the ABOMS has been Co-Chair of the Orthognathic, Trauma, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Facial Cosmetic Surgery section of the Oral Certifying Examination of the Boards. Dr. Perciaccante is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has written for several textbooks on Orthognathic Surgery, Temporomandibular Joint Surgery, Dentoalveolar Surgery, Preprosthetic, and Reconstructive Surgery and lectures regularly at National and International meetings and also at local meetings throughout the country.

Dr. Perciaccante has served as the President of the Georgia Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery section of the International Association of Dental Research. He is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, and the Northern District Dental Society. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and has served as the Chairman of the Committee on Residency Education and Training, of which he is still a member. Dr. Perciaccante is a consultant to the Georgia Board of Dentistry on Anesthesia. He is a site visitor for the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), examining Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery resident training programs and also has served on CODA’s Residency Review Committee. After serving six years as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Perciaccante was elected to an eight-year term as a member of the Board of Directors and currently serves as the President of the ABOMS.

Dr. Perciaccante provides general anesthesia for procedures when appropriate. He practices the full scope of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, including wisdom tooth removal and extractions, dental implant placement, maxillofacial pathology and reconstruction, surgery for temporomandibular disorders and facial trauma. Dr. Perciaccante has a particular interest in orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery and facial aesthetic surgery and is one of the most active and experienced orthognathic surgeons in the southeast. Dr. Perciaccante lives in Peachtree City, with his wife Amy and children Antonia and Dominic.

What Does Board Certification Mean and Why is it Important?

Bill Klaproth (Host): This is an Aaoms On The Go Podcast. I'm Bill Klaproth. And with me is Dr. Vincent Perciaccante who is here to discuss, what does board certification mean and why is it important? Dr. Perciaccante thank you for being here.

Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS: Thank you for having me.

Bill Klaproth (Host): You betcha. We appreciate it. So what kind of education and requirements must a surgeon meet to begin the process?

Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS: So to begin the process. for board certification, one must havegraduated from a United States or Canadian dental school that is accredited by the commission on dental accreditation. As well as completing an oral and maxillofacial surgery, advanced training residency, approved by the commission.

Bill Klaproth (Host): So what examinations and maintenance does an ABOMS Diplomat have to go through to become certified and maintain that certification?

Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS: The first step in board certification is the qualifying examination. Which is a 350 question written examination, covering the 10 domains of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Oral maxillofacial surgeons are experts of given as a computerized based test.

Bill Klaproth (Host): So after all of this training and certification, what kind of expertise does an OMS have?

Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS: Surgery of the face, mouth and jaws. everything from wisdom teeth to dental implants to John face reconstruction.

Bill Klaproth (Host): Yeah, so really the experts when it comes to that type of surgery. So if someone is looking for that how can one, find out if their surgeon of choice is a Board certified by ABOMS?

Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS: So on the ABOMS website, there's a section called find a diplomat. And under that you can search for, surgeons in your area who are certified by the board.

Bill Klaproth (Host): So Dr. Perciaccante I'm sure you get this question all the time, we always hear this He or she, or they are they're board certified. What separates board certified from a non board certified surgeon?

Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS: So a board certified surgeon has submitted themselves to a Rigorous process that ensures that they meet the highest standards of, training and expertise. And they've also committed themselves to process of lifelong learning and maintenance. of that level of expertise.

Bill Klaproth (Host): So Truly the best of the best. If you all to put it in layman's terms.

Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS: Absolutely.

Bill Klaproth (Host): So Dr. Perciaccante, this is a really interesting, and I know we're talking about why board certification is important. To you, what is it meant to, to your career and what do you think it means to others who become board certified?

Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS: Sure. Well, board certification. as you go through training is, something that initially seems like the pinnacle of your educational process. And truly it's just a point within the process, you know, achieving that certification. And then maintaining the high standards. And My personal experience, becoming involved with the board and has been the greatest thing in my professional career.

Bill Klaproth (Host): Wow. That's really great to hear. So, is there anything else that we should know about a board certification? Anything that I haven't asked you? Anything else we should know about this?

Vincent Perciaccante, DDS, FACS: I would just say trust yourself to a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. They have shown themselves to be of The highest quality and the greatest commitment to the specialty and their patients.
