Air fresheners have been a staple in homes and offices because they are marketed with the promise of creating clean, healthy indoor air.
This is so far from the truth that it almost could be a crime.
In fact, air fresheners are extremely toxic and contain chemicals that have been linked to cancer, birth defects, hormonal problems, respiratory problems, asthma and more.
What are these chemicals? Phthalates are big offenders, as is formaldehyde.
Unfortunately, identifying these harmful ingredients is not so easy.
Recent studies have discovered dozens of different dangerous chemicals in various brands of air fresheners, including chemicals that have been regulated as toxic or hazardous under federal law. However, these ingredients are typically not even listed on the label.
One particular study, called the "Children of the 90s" study, found that in homes where air fresheners were used every day, a third more babies suffered diarrhea and earaches and the moms suffered higher rates of depression and headaches.
So, what can you do to protect yourself and your loved ones?
First, start by eliminating all synthetic and inorganic air fresheners from your home or other environments where you spend time.
Second, enlist in the help of plants! Spider plants, English ivy and rubber plants are all excellent at removing toxic chemicals from your home.
Finally, make your own natural air fresheners with water and your favorite essential oil.
