Mark Mathis: Hey, this is the One Minute Marketer. I'm Mark Mathis, Creative Director at Amperage Marketing and Fundraising. And I was just thinking, is the whole world using the Internet? I think we've all said at one time or another, "Everyone uses the Internet." But you would only be partially right, like so many broad unsubstantiated statements.

The pandemic has definitely driven up overall internet usage. Pew research reports that 31% of US adults go online almost constantly. That's one-third of all US citizens online all the time. Surprisingly, Pew research center found that 7% of US adults do not use the internet at all. That's more than 23 million people, according to Mark's math, cut off from the Internet of things.

High Internet usage is driven by age, high household income, where you live, rural or urban and education. According to the study, one quarter of people, 65 plus don't use the internet. Okay, wait a second. That's just pure age-ism. What the survey should have done is break down the difference between people 65 and 80 and 80 plus. At 65, if you don't use the internet, you're going to have difficulty with your Medicare, all your healthcare and social security. The other age categories only bridge 11 to 19 years in duration. The 65 plus cohort spans 35 plus years, and it's growing. You do have to watch these surveys to make sure they're not making too much correlation from their numbers.

What the Pew survey does show is that the Internet of things is becoming more and more part of our lives. More than eight in 10 US adults go online at least once daily. As the pandemic cools, the results, they may continue to show more usage. The trend has been growing steadily. The pandemic only accelerated the trend as if pushing the Internet of things pedal to the floor.
