MRI Safety Risk-Management Structures Don’t Exist

We recognize radiology as one of the most heavily-regulated parts of healthcare, but what most risk managers are unaware of is that there are areas within radiology - specifically MRI - where there are significant risks that are NOT managed by regulation, or CMS conditions of participation, or accreditation. This has been an area of risk / safety where both the identification of the risks and the strategies for effective management of those risks fall to the individual site.

Toby Gilk, MRSO, MRSE

Tobias “Toby” Gilk is trained as an architect and began his involvement in MRI Safety twenty-plus years ago designing MRI facilities. His interest in MRI safety quickly metastasized from just the physical environment to all of MRI safety. He’s twice served on the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) MRI Safety Committee and is a named author on their 2007, 2019, and 2020 MRI safety publications. He is a founding Board member of the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS) and a past chair of the organization. He holds ABMRS credentials for MRSO and MRSE. He continues to work as an architect for a company called RAD-Planning, as well as providing MRI safety and operational consulting through his own company, Gilk Radiology Consultants. In 2025 he co-authored The Technologist’s MRI Safety Handbook.
