Let Those Dogs Out

The music and entertainment website Spinner ranked "Who Let the Dogs Out" (recorded by the Baha Men) as No. 1 on its list of Top 20 Worst Songs Ever. And some folks insist that the anthem was recorded in response to the anger and frustration of the Cleveland Browns' football fans - and their raucous Dawg Pound - when their football team was hustled out of Cleveland to Baltimore in 1995.

But it's a different tune entirely when you let your "dawgs" out, especially if you head out after them. That's a formula for moving that gets you healthy and happy!

A new study from the University of Missouri reports that dog walkers (it doesn't have to be your pooch) get more frequent and vigorous exercise, have lower BMIs and make fewer visits to the doctor than people who don't walk dogs. Plus, forming a bond with a dog that you take out for walks regularly helps ease stress, lowers blood pressure, fills your heart with love and integrates you into your community. (Have you ever noticed how people stop and talk to you when you're with your dog?)

So, just remember, next time it's raining and you have to take the dog out: Perseverance has benefits. That's what the Baha Men found out when, despite the ridicule they endured for their hit tune, they won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2001. And you'll be rewarded too, with better health, if you just dance out the door with your dog!
