The 12-Month Plan To Lose Weight And Keep It Off

The roster of A-listers with weight fluctuations includes those who gain for a role and then lose it again (Bradley Cooper, Renee Zellweger), beef up during the season (Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia went from 275 to 305 pounds during the 2014-15 season) and struggle to keep it off (Kristie Alley, John Travolta, John Goodman).

Turns out that one reason actors who beef up for a role can lose it quickly and heavier folks who lose weight often put it back on just as quickly is that whichever way you go, it takes a year for a weight change to become your new normal.

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen have found that as you start to lose weight, your body cranks up production of the "feed me!" hormone ghrelin. But after a year of sustained weight loss, that hormone returns to normal levels. Whew! Also after a year, "I'm full" hormone levels increase, making weight loss easier to maintain.

Unfortunately, only about 1 in 6 overweight or obese folks who lose weight keep it off. That's because sustaining a healthier lifestyle has a lot to do with how rewarded you feel by your efforts.

Now we know that if you make a commitment to achieve a healthy weight and stick with it for 12 months, you can count on a great reward: an easier time staying thinner and healthier, because you reset your "normal" weight! So, get started today!
