Many casual users say they use cannabis to relax, calm down, and ease depressive symptoms. So what is the science behind that logic? And what are the benefits in a clinical setting?

Continuing our conversation on psychiatry and cannabis, we are joined once again by Dr. Tiffany Buckley, to focus on the role of the endocannabinoid system in the psychopathology of certain conditions such as anxiety & depression.

Dr. Tiffany Buckley, PharmD, BCPS, BCPP is an Advanced Practice Psychiatric Pharmacist working with the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Masters in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics (MCST) Program, and joins Dr. Leigh Vinocur MD, MS in this episode to discuss.

My passions include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, medical cannabis, teaching, curriculum design, and evidence-based medicine. Currently, I practice as an advanced practice psychiatric pharmacist at a maximum-security psychiatric hospital in Maryland. I specialize in medication management for psychiatric patients who are involved with the legal system. My patients have dual diagnoses of severe mental illness (including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) and cannabis use disorder; therefore, I send time educating staff and patients about the effects of cannabinoids on mental illness.

I believe education is the way to change the world. I have an extensive history of teaching and curriculum design, which I began when I worked as a high school Chemistry teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools through Teach For America. Thanks to various mentors fostering my professional development, I now serve as Faculty in the MS in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. I am course manager for Advanced Cannabis Therapeutics for Neuropsychiatric Conditions (MCST 606). Working with a talented team of instructional designers and medical cannabis professionals, I spearhead and implement the creative design of this course. In MCST 606, I teach students how to dissect the latest evidence to explore cannabis’s place in therapy for the treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders through complex, reality-based patient cases.
