The Master of Science (MS) in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is in its third class now. The Program provides students with the knowledge they need to support patients and the medical cannabis industry, add to existing research, and develop well-informed medical cannabis policy.
The two-year program based at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Md., blends online instruction with face-to-face experiences to prepare graduates to respond to the increasing demand for medical cannabis with an understanding of the basic science and clinical uses of the cannabis plant.
This is also the program all 3 of our hosts met in and graduated from! So in this encore episode from April 2022 Dr. Tiffany Buckley, PharmD, BCPS, BCPP who is an Advanced Practice Psychiatric Pharmacist working with the University program, joins Dr. Hal Altman MD, MS to talk about how it started and who its students are.

Introduction to the Masters in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics (MCST) Program

I believe education is the way to change the world. I have an extensive history of teaching and curriculum design, which I began when I worked as a high school Chemistry teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools through Teach For America. Thanks to various mentors fostering my professional development, I now serve as Faculty in the MS in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. I am course manager for Advanced Cannabis Therapeutics for Neuropsychiatric Conditions (MCST 606). Working with a talented team of instructional designers and medical cannabis professionals, I spearhead and implement the creative design of this course. In MCST 606, I teach students how to dissect the latest evidence to explore cannabis’s place in therapy for the treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders through complex, reality-based patient cases.
Dr. Tiffany Buckley, PharmD, BCPS, BCPP
My passions include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, medical cannabis, teaching, curriculum design, and evidence-based medicine. Currently, I practice as an advanced practice psychiatric pharmacist at a maximum-security psychiatric hospital in Maryland. I specialize in medication management for psychiatric patients who are involved with the legal system. My patients have dual diagnoses of severe mental illness (including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) and cannabis use disorder; therefore, I send time educating staff and patients about the effects of cannabinoids on mental illness.I believe education is the way to change the world.
