Children often engage in risky behaviors in terms of mid-block crossing the street and crossing against the signal. In older children, there is a much higher incidence of using electronic devices, and listening to cellphones or music that can cause serious, life threatening injuries in children and teens.
What is needed is greater parental supervision, and safety tip reminders by pediatricians, that could play an important role in preventing child pedestrian accidents.

Deborah Levine, MD is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at NYU School of Medicine and a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Attending Physician at Bellevue Hospital Center. She completed her pediatric residency at NY Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and her pediatric emergency fellowship at NYU/Bellevue. Dr. Levine’s academic research interests include infectious diseases in neonates and injury prevention. She has published many abstracts and manuscripts. She has is currently a co-investigator of two New York State funded projects to examine risk factors associated with child pedestrians struck by motor vehicles and child bicyclists injured in NYC. Dr. Levine is a lecturer, mentor and most importantly, a mother to 3 wonderful children.
