Safe storage means a gun should be stored unloaded in a locked box or locking safe. Ammunition should be stored in a separate location. With weapons and ammunition should be out of reach of children. If your child can find cookies, they can find your firearms.

Before your child goes on a play date, ask other parents about weapons in the home and storage methods.

Katherine HoopsKatherine Hoops, MD, MPH, FAAP. Dr. Katherine Hoops is an assistant professor of pediatric critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and core faculty in the Center for Gun Policy and Research in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Her areas of clinical expertise are in pediatric sepsis and pediatric trauma.  Dr. Hoops’ research is focused on the prevention of pediatric gun injury. She conducts research on understanding messaging to patients and families on guns and improving physicians’ education and practices related to firearm injury risk reduction.
