No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service: 4 Tips for Unplugging

Written by
Do you remember the old sign: NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, NO SERVICE?

It was hung on gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants to convey a threat that you would not have access to that establishment's service if you hadn't shoes on, nor a shirt. What I wouldn't give to have that sign hanging almost everywhere these days!

Well, ok...the shirt thing is questionable.

But having no shoes on, feeling the great earth and warm grass underneath my feet and having no service by not having access to the electronic blizzard and bings and dings and rings of our modern day?!

I would heed to that sign each time I saw it!

Without me going on a vandalizing spree and hanging new signs everywhere, I have come up with some helpful tips to help me unplug from and enjoy having "no service".

1. Do not use your smart phone/device for your alarm clock.

The temptation is way too great to hit the alarm and immediately check the myriad of communication, be it email, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. You have no control over what you might see and those moments in the morning are precious. It is the time when you wake up, own your space, set your daily intention and move through your life from a power place.

If you let this space be taken over by mindless posts and emails, wrought with responsibility, you are setting yourself up for stress and heartache for the rest of the day.

2. Create a time block of E-Freeness with your family.

Pick a time each and everyday, especially on the weekends when your family is together, and deem this an electronic free zone. This is the time where you talk, play, cuddle, and do anything besides use something electronic. This will foster more authentic closeness without distraction.

3. Consider Communicating.

On your outgoing message and or email signature, tell people exactly what to expect from your communication. For example, you could say on your outgoing "I check these messages twice a day at noon and 5 pm and I look forward to getting back to you as soon as possible" or, on your email signature, you could do the same thing. This will stop the endless and obsessive "checking" of things and will create clear boundaries for those who need you to get back to them.

4. Take an E-vacation.

No, really...do it! You might think you will shrivel up and have small convulsions without knowing and seeing the tweets, posts, notes, and texts but if you go on vacation...... GO ON VACATION. You will be amazed at what your start to notice, feel and think about again. You might re-fall in love with your mate, yourself, the earth and the wonder of it all. You might get inspired to write, to sing or to play.

You might also need to go through some withdrawal but, it's ok...I am a doctor, and I know your will be ok!

So, please take off your shoes and deny yourself service!

Much love and hugs,
Dr. Holly
