Involuntary Celibacy: The Painful Effects of Vaginismus

Vaginismus is a sexual condition where there is involuntary tightness of the vagina during attempted intercourse, which can cause discomfort, burning, pain, penetration problems, or complete inability to have intercourse.

There are a lot of muscles in your vagina and pelvic floor. When it comes to a condition such as vaginismus, your physician needs to figure out why your muscles are spasming so tightly.

The reasons for the condition could be attributed to previous sexual abuse, psychological factors or a physical discomfort with intercourse.

Dr. Irwin Goldstein is the Director of San Diego Sexual Medicine at Alvarado Hospital. In this segment, he explains the symptoms of vaginismus and how to effectively treat the condition.
