Carol Alt Dishes on Her Exercise Routine

They may seem naturally toned and slim, but even supermodels have to work out.
They may seem naturally toned and slim, but even supermodels have to work out.

For Carol Alt, her exercise of choice is yoga.

When she first started, Carol's goal for her fitness routine was to build muscle tone and to maintain her shape, but also to de-stress. Her raw food diet already does a lot to help her maintain her shape, so she can actually enjoy her exercise by choosing yoga and all its benefits.

And she does... she looks forward to those 30 minutes a day, that are just for her and about which she feels absolutely no guilt.

Carol also listens carefully to her body; she doesn't try to overdo it with her exercise. She knows that at a certain age, you are more susceptible to pulling muscles or suffering strains.

What advice does Carol have for being consistent?

She recognizes that the big problem for a lot of people when it comes to working out is that they don't set goals and they don't have fun with their fitness routines.

If you struggle to maintain a workout routine, because you're pushing yourself to leave your office, go out into the cold to get to a gym, workout, then head back into the cold all sweaty and finally return to your office or home... well, it's no wonder that you would be easily swayed into giving it up.

You shouldn't feel guilty if you don't go to a gym. There are plenty of effective exercise routines that you can do in the comfort of your own home or even office.

What about making a New Year's Resolution to work out and get fit?

Well, doing so can be a double-edged sword. Many people vow at the turn of the new year to really do it this time and stick to that workout plan. But, after a few weeks, they work out a little less and then a little less, and pretty soon they're back to sitting on the couch. Sometimes failing at this sort of resolution can cause even more angst in a one's mind and body.

But, if you go about your vow to exercise the right way and make the choice to incorporate fitness into your life, it can be very effective and rewarding.

Again, a huge part of that is setting your goals for the year... "By the end of the year, I want to be able to do 10 new yoga poses." Work towards those goals, but don't stress about it if you fall a little behind. Have fun with it.

What time of day is the best to exercise?

It depends on the person; but, if you're someone who is having trouble sleeping, you might benefit from a morning routine. Why? Because exercising in the evening raises your cortisol levels, which can interfere with sleep. Plus, then you know you have it out of the way for the day and you can save the evening for activities with friends and family.

Remember, you can incorporate all sorts of "exercises" throughout your day, whether it's taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking a bit farther from the entrance to a store or other building.

Listen in as Carol joins Andrea and Lisa to share more tips for sticking to a workout plan, as well as simple things she does throughout the day to maintain her supermodel figure.
