Are Women More Prone to Anxiety?

Anxiety is used to describe several disorders that cause nervousness, worrying, panic, and fear.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older (18% of U.S. population).

But, did you know that women are twice as likely to have an anxiety disorder than men?

The ADAA suggests that since there are differences in brain chemistry between males and females, that women's fight-or-flight response is activated more readily and longer than in men.

It's true that you may experience anxiety at some point in your life, but when does it become a problem?

Some symptoms of an anxiety disorder include shortness of breath, heart palpitations, chest pain, nervousness, upset stomach, sleep problems, inability to rest, feeling powerless, sweating, trouble concentrating, and feeling weak/tired.

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms or feel like your anxiety is getting in the way of your everyday life, you may want to consider seeing your doctor.

What are the treatment options available if you're suffering from anxiety?

  • Diet and exercise
  • Psychotherapy
  • Consider medication
