With a childhood obesity epidemic in full force, how can we, collectively as a nation, encourage both adults and children to eat well?
Many experts say, it has to start with the parents and with family physicians. But, says Registered Dietitian, Ashley Koff, many of her own clients are parents and physicians who are obese and battling obesity-related diseases.
Koff says that in her experience, sometimes helping kids first is even a better step to helping everyone.
Nutrition is such a huge part of battling the obesity epidemic, but even the most basic nutrition knowledge seems foreign to certain pockets of the population; especially if they've grown up on Cheetos and Gatorade.
Koff likes to introduce her clients the concept of color, in that every color that exists in nature does something amazing for your body. Think of all the rainbow of colors in seasonal vegetables and fruits... the choices are unending.
Also, Koff says water is extremely important. Not the flavored waters, coconut waters, "vitamin" waters; but plain water.
Becoming a healthier family doesn't have to be overwhelming. Koff advised picking one thing and start with that. Not everyone is doing everything wrong. Oftentimes, parents -- and even kids -- are doing lots of things right.
Listen in as Koff joins Dr. Susanne to share more about the nutritional aspect of childhood obesity, as well as simple tips to help families get healthier.
