Taking antibiotics can be necessary when you’re fighting a bacterial infection. However, too many helpful gut bacteria can be knocked off in the process.
With fecal microbiota transplant, stool from a healthy donor is implanted in an unhealthy gut. Good bacteria from FMT can repopulate the gut and improve overall health. It is currently limited to clinical trials.
Not all of the prebiotics and probiotics present in food are designed to survive in the gut. Yet, they can still give gut health a boost as they pass through.
Listen as Saffron Cassaday joins Dr. Susanne Bennett to discuss FMT.

Saffron Cassaday is a documentary filmmaker based in Toronto and Los Angeles. Her films have been broadcast in over 40 countries including on PBS, Netflix, Hulu and CBC in North America.
Her current film, Designer Shit, is about Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT), the act of taking stool from a healthy donor and implanting it into the gut of a sick person. Saffron, who has suffered from ulcerative colitis for nearly a decade, sets off on a journey to determine if this form of treatment could potentially cure her of her disease. Through interviews with some of the top researchers in the field, Saffron is enlightened on the power “poo” has to affect our health, happiness and possibly even our physical appearance. - Length (mins): 26:21
