Head Over Heels for Life—World Class Pole Vaulter Shares Her Wisdom
Kay Diane Glynn
I grew up on a farm in Iowa (moving to Missouri last year) with one older brother and was always active. I took dance and acrobat lessons for 14 years and was ecstatic to win a ‘68 Ford Mustang at a talent show at the age of 15. I knew I would never stop. I enjoyed owning a dance studio for over 20 years. I loved performing and even in my 50s I performed my unusual acrobatic routine on folding chairs on such tv shows as The View, Oprah, Jimmy Kimmel Show, Late Night With David Letterman, and America’s Got Talent. My other love was competing in track and field where I held high school state records in the long jump and sprints. At the encouragement of my children, I returned to track and field at the age of 48 when I competed at the Iowa Games. I have had some things to overcome over the years such as both hips being replaced with resurfacings, a torn rotator cuff, and a torn ACL in my knee, but life goes on! Now, at 71, and after being inducted into the USATF Masters Hall of Fame, I’m pleased to currently hold indoor world records in the pole vault, long jump, triple jump, pentathlon, and heptathlon for the women’s 70-74 age division. As I head into outdoor track season, I am pleasantly surprised to be ranked number one in the world in eight events! While I may not be average, I am just a normal person, and I enjoy my time with my husband of 51 years, our three kids and eight grandkids! I’m grateful to feel happy and healthy. Never give up!
