He received his medical degree from The University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed training in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology at The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He was recruited from Philadelphia to join the University of Cincinnati to start their structural heart program. Midwest Structural Heart and Valve Symposium: A Case-Based Approach
Melanie Cole (Host): On Saturday, October 13, 2018, the Christ Hospital Health Network is hosting the first annual Midwest Structural Heart and Valve Symposium. This will be a powerful all-day experience and here to tell us about the symposium is my guest, Dr. Satya Shreenivas. He’s an interventional cardiologist at the Christ Hospital Health Network. Dr. Shreenivas tell us about the symposium.
Satya Shreenivas, MD (Guest): We are looking to have a very comprehensive all-day discussion on how to manage structural heart disease. We have people coming from all over this region, from as far away as New York and Texas and then of course in the Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia region and the topic will be how to help our colleagues, the people that take care of heart disease, structural heart disease; how to manage tough cases. So, we are really looking forward to it.
Melanie: Sounds absolutely fascinating. So, where is it, Dr. Shreenivas?
Dr. Shreenivas: This will be held in the Cincinnati, Ohio on Fourth Street. It will be on October 13th, which is a Saturday. It will start at 7:30 in the morning and we hope to have people heading out the doors by five o’clock, but it’s breakneck speed. The morning will be focused on aortic therapies, mostly on aortic stenosis with the afternoon devoted to mitral valve therapies and then finishing up in the later afternoon with a discussion on the appropriate management of ASD closure, PFO closure and also prevention of stroke with some left atrial appendage closure discussions. And the location will be at the Queen City Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Melanie: Who should attend this symposium doctor?
Dr. Shreenivas: It’s geared mostly towards the physicians that are treating the heart valve disease. Now, that ranges from the actual interventional cardiologists and the surgeons who are in the thick of things in the OR and in the catheterization lab; but also, the physicians that are managing these patients before and after so, general cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons will gain a lot by attending. We are looking for all levels of physicians whether you are a resident, a fellow, or in practice. There will be a lot to learn from this symposium.
Melanie: So, now you have mentioned a little bit about what will be discussed. Get into some more detail like some promising new therapies for catheter-based therapies that might be discussed.
Dr. Shreenivas: Absolutely, one of the most exciting things that we hope people take away from this is the novel devices. There are a lot of therapies that are approved to treat structural heart disease but one of the unique things about the symposium will be discussion about what’s coming down the pipeline. On both the mitral and the aortic therapies sessions, we will have sessions devoted to the new valves, the new therapies so I hope by the time the day is over, not only will the physicians know how to treat some of the tough cases that they might encounter; but also, leave with an understanding of what’s coming down the pipeline that’s not currently available. That’s one of the things we are really looking forward to.
Melanie: What’s exciting that attendees may not know is going to happen at the symposium?
Dr. Shreenivas: Well, it’s a who’s who of physicians that treat heart valve disease. Even though this is a one day symposium, the number of physicians that we have invited to come give talks, to be on panels; rivals that of many national meetings and so to not have to travel, take three or four days out of your time; but still get the educational impact by coming to a one day event, I think will be the best part about this symposium. So, for example, our keynote speakers will be Marty Leon from Columbia, will be Michael Riordan from Houston, Texas. We are also having Gilbert Tang coming down from Mt. Sinai, Scott Lily from Ohio State, Steve Yakubov also from Columbus and then several surgeons, Jeffery Ann Sweeney, Jeff Griffin, J. Michael Smith, just to name a very few of the physicians that will be part of the discussions, will be giving talks. So, when I said it was going to be a breakneck speed and there will be back to back talks; I really meant it. I think I’m really looking forward to a lot of good discussion on really national leaders in this field.
Melanie: And do you think that other providers will get something out of this symposium as well? The nurse coordinators, or advanced practice clinicians? Can they attend and get something really exciting out of it?
Dr. Shreenivas: Absolutely. The best part about this will be watching people that deal with very tough cases on daily basis, talk through how to manage these cases and I think the team members will see that there’s many different ways to manage these cases and get an understanding of the various thought processes that physicians are using all across the country. Sometimes, the cases that we will be discussing, there isn’t a guideline or approved method of management and so having that kind of open discussion. The reason we chose this format, a case-based format, is we believe that the discussion on how to manage these patients will allow everyone to appreciate the difficulty and also the thought process that physicians work through when they are met with these challenges and I think that thought process, that talking through the cases will be beneficial to the entire heart team. And we are really looking forward and we are encouraging the entire heart team to attend.
Melanie: And before we discuss how people can find out more about the symposium; give us one last bit of information. What would you like the listeners to know that will really encourage them and let them know how exciting this really is going to be?
Dr. Shreenivas: If you are a physician, a heart team member that takes care of patients with heart valve disease; I can’t think of a more high-impact one day that you could spend to learn more about how to help your patients. The fact that it is local, the fact that it is easy to get to, the fact that it is a low bar of entry; we are really looking for – the reason we set all of this up is we are really hoping that we get a lot of heart team members to come and attend. I think it will allow for a lot of good discussion and hopefully improvement in the care of your patients. So, it’s very exciting.
