Whether you are new to the healthy living lifestyle or a healthy living veteran this is the place for the honest answers to your questions, Naturally Savvy with registered holistic nutritionist Andrea Donsky and health journalist Lisa Davis on RadioMD.com.

LISA: April is Autism Awareness month, so Andrea and I are going to talk about a book that I am involved in. It’s called Easy to Love but Hard to Live With: Real People, Invisible Disabilities, and True Stories it was edited by myself and Tricia Bliven-Chasinoff, MA. There’s a great Q&A with Henry Winkler and the forward is by Jennifer O’Toole, who is an incredible woman with Asperger’s. Matter of fact she, her husband, and her three kids all have Asperger’s syndrome.

ANDREA: Wow, wow. You know what I want to know? Lisa, tell me a little bit about your book what inspired you to be a part of it and write some of it?

LISA: Well, you know, I wanted to share my mother’s story. My mother had something called sensory processing disorder. Now, she never got a formal diagnosis but she would spend hours in the dark and she couldn’t walk on grass and she couldn’t drive on the freeway because everything was to fast and she had a lot of anxiety and nervousness and she ended up getting depressed because just doctor after doctor just said “Oh, you’re just hysterical. It’s all in your head. There’s nothing wrong with you.” Then, I have a daughter who is exhibiting many of the same symptoms and suddenly, then, at two and a half she got a diagnosis. Her first diagnosis she has a whole bunch of sensory processing disorders and suddenly, I thought, "Oh, my goodness. That’s what my mom must’ve had," and I talked to a bunch of OT’s and they’re the ones that diagnose it or you can see a neurologist. They all said, "Yes, from all the things you’re saying, it sounds like that’s what your mom had," and so the idea of somebody going through their life not being validated, not getting to share their story; having to pretty much live in shame and be embarrassed; not really understand themselves or have other people understand them made me say, "You know what? We need to do something about this." So, I didn’t want to write a whole book myself, so I thought, "Well, what could I do? So, I thought an anthology would be great because then I could look at any type of invisible brain-based disorder. So, it can be ADHD. It can be dyslexia, I mentioned there’s a great Q&A with Henry Winkler. It can be autism, a spectrum disorder and then, I thought, "Well, also mental illnesses too." OCD, bi-polar, depression, there’s a lot of things and the one thing I wish we had in here is PTSD, which we don’t. And if we ever do another book I think it’s so important. And the other thing that I love about the book is that you’ve got half of the stories are by adults with these issues and they get to share their own point of view. And then about half of the stories are by people who live or love people with these issues and it’s very interesting because honestly it’s challenging for everybody. (laughing) But there are so many great things, too, but anyways that’s…I really just…My heart breaks for my mother who died in her 50’s of ovarian cancer and never got validated, so I really want other people to have a voice and feel safe and get acknowledged.

ANDREA: What about your dad? How was it even as you living with your mom?

LISA: You know it was interesting. I kind of feel like my dad was, and he and I have spoken about this, I kind of feel like he was kind of in his own world. He was very self-involved he was the President of School Board, he was a marathon runner, he was a singer and an actor in community theater in addition to having a full time practice as an ophthalmologist and he wasn’t home a lot. He was like “Oh, I’ve got to go running. I’ve got to practice my…Oh, it’s another rehearsal.” And I’m like, "Okay. Your wife is hiding in her room. We’re her children talking care of her because she’s kind of inept in terms of the overwhelming emotions she had and you’re just kind of out doing your own thing." He’s apologized and he’s said, "I was selfish and I was young," and things and that but it’s still really hard for the kids when one of the parents is sort of acting like there’s nothing wrong or not wanting to see it, maybe.

ANDREA: Now, is that something that she obviously was born with it? Did it get worse as she got older because she wasn’t diagnosed properly?

LISA: You know, it’s interesting all these are genetic issues and there’s a lot of people who argue about, "Well, my child wasn’t autistic until they were 2 after a vaccine or this and that," but in my opinion and I’m not negating other people’s experiences, but my daughter came out and right away I knew there was something different. She had the alertness of a baby that was several months old at birth, she cried so loud and so often they wouldn’t let her stay in the nursery at the hospital. Luckily, I’m the type that wanted her with me, and then as a baby if the wind blew on her face she would cry, so I don’t know for my mother, but I know for my daughter it’s been since birth. Since then she’s gotten an ADHD diagnosis, something called NLD and something called PDDNOS, which is sort of like if you take the autism spectrum just go right above it, it’s like you have some of the factors but not enough to get the diagnosis I call it like “Autism-ish” that’s sort of what she has. And there are stories in the book by people who have PDDNOS and the other thing I want to mention, too, is that there’s some great advice from experts who really can look at the essays and then we ask them questions and what’s kind of cool is that some of the people in the book who have the experiences and have these disorders are actually the experts themselves because they’ve been able to find ways to help themselves. One of my favorites Brian Leaf and we’ve had Brian Leaf on the show. He used yoga and meditation for his ADHD and so, or ADD, and I just find it so interesting that you can learn from other people that have been there. And that’s the whole thing we don’t want to be, we all feel like we’re alone in it, but we’re really not. So it’s kind of like a support group and advice and support all in one place so I’m very obviously very proud of the book.

ANDREA: Well, no! I’m very proud of you that you wrote it and, definitely, I think it’s something that people who have it themselves these, what would you refer to them as, are they disorders, disabilities?

LISA: Yes, they’re neurological issues and, you know, it’s funny because I was torn to be honest about the title--Easy to Love, Hard to Live With. In some ways I felt like that sounded kind of mean but it’s part of a series there’s Easy to Love, Hard to Raise about children. There’s going to be Easy to Love but Hard to Teach, Easy to Love but Hard to Treat, I’m not involved with those.

    ANDREA: I think that’s a great title.

LISA: Do you? Okay. So, I thought it’s hard to live with for the person living with it and then it’s hard to live with for the people that have to live with them but the invisible disabilities, I don’t see, I see it more as a challenge than a disability but that’s sort of the lingo the publisher used. I mean, I definitely think that for some people for my mother it was definitely a disability. For my daughter, she says she has learning differences. I haven’t told her, "You have ADHD. You have…," I mean, she has so many things and for her, she just says, "You know what? I learn differently and it’s okay and I react strongly to things and I’m sensitive and I just do the best I can," and, again, it’s raising that awareness and if you think someone in your family might have one of these, it’s a good idea to look into it and get some help, so they don’t feel overwhelmed and you don’t feel overwhelmed.

ANDREA: Now, do you think your daughter will be able to function in regular society or will she always need care?

LISA: Oh, yes, definitely/ I mean I think she’s always going to be quirky and I mean. I joke with my husband, she’ll probably be living with us forever. I can sort of see her living with us forever but going out getting a job. I don’t know. I mean kids can really change and grow and like all the adults in this book, they all had their issues. You know, I was listening to Henry Winkler in another interview and the host said to him “Oh, so you had dyslexia when you were a kid?” and he said “No. I still have dyslexia” and as a matter of fact I just did an interview on another show about adult ADHD. You know, it doesn’t look the same. It’s not about not being able to sit still. It’s about not paying your bills on time; not getting to work on time; getting so bored with the mundane things that you have to do and certain jobs that you just tune out. But then, having hyper focus in areas that you’re interested in. So there’s some really great stories about adults with ADHD and it helps with the misconceptions, too. I think about people always ask, "Well, is your daughter going to outgrow these issue?" and it’s like you will in some ways and you’re going to get coping skills. Like right now, I’m sort of… I sort of help her self regulate but I think as she gets older…Like the other day, this was impressive. She said to me “You know, mommy, I know I interrupt a lot but the thing is, if I don’t interrupt you I forget things really quickly so I know it seems rude but I need you to. If you’re talking to someone else I need you to say to them, “My daughter has some learning differences. She forgets. She’s going to interrupt and otherwise I’m not going to know what I said” and I thought, "Wow. That’s pretty mature to be able to be that self-aware," right?

    ANDREA: Pretty insightful, yes.

LISA: Right. So, it’s like advocating for yourself.

ANDREA: Hmm. That is pretty great. Very intuitive. And she’s in touch with herself which I think is really amazing, right? For her.

    LISA: Oh, yes.

ANDREA: So, you know, this is such an interesting topic, Lisa, and I think everybody who is listening and everybody should really go and buy this book. Lisa, tell everybody what the title is again.

LISA: Again, it’s Easy to Love but Hard to Live With: Real People, Invisible Disabilities, True Stories. You can get it on Amazon. You can go to itsyourhealthnetwork.com and it’s right there but it’s, you know, people that have read it who don’t even have people in their lives with these issues have been so moved and touched and especially if you do have people or you yourself are struggling to get encouragement and value. it’s a book of hope and that’s the really important message.

ANDREA: Well, I think at the end of the day getting anybody help is amazing, right? So, Lisa, congratulations on the book. Everybody go and buy a copy. Whether you are new to the healthy lifestyle or healthy living veteran this is the place for the honest answers to your questions. Naturally Savvy with registered holistic nutritionist Andrea Donsky and health journalist Lisa Davis. On RadioMD.com.

LISA: There are so many things I love about doing Naturally Savvy radio and one of my favorites is getting to talk to fantastic people like Carol Alt who joins us twice a month here on Naturally Savvy.

    Hi, Carol!

CAROL: Hi guys. How are you?

LISA: We’re great it’s great to have you back. You know, Carol, I’m really excited to dive into your book A Healthy You: Boost Your Energy, Live Cleaner, and Look and Feel Younger Every Day. So, Andrea and I went through the book and looked at things that were really interesting to us which was everything (laughing). So we really had to be choosy. I really loved the top six ways to eat like our ancestors that everyone can follow. And the first is "eat real food". You know, it’s really simple but it seems like in our busy society, it just seems so tough. What are some tips, Carol, to help people get back to that?

CAROL: Well, first what you have to understand is just because people say, "Well, what do you mean eat like our ancestors ate? I eat meat like my dad did or I cook all the foods my mom cooked, but I’m getting fat and I don’t understand." Here’s what happened, in the 1950’s when it came to food, we started having major changes. Besides pasteurization we had DDT, we had people moving from farms into cities so food was being processed and the reason they processed it was to cook the enzymes out of it so they could ship it from the farms to the city and it wouldn’t go bad. And then we moved on into even worse things like radiating our food. I think like 4 years ago or 5 years ago, any food that is coming in and out of the country has to be radiated. If you want to trade with the United States, you have to radiate your food when it leaves your country and we radiate it again when it comes into this country. So, again, you’re killing enzymes and destroying the nutritional value of the food. But even worse, now we’re genetically modifying. So, you know, with the movement of people and the DDT and the genetic modification and the radiation of our food and the processing and over processing and adding to that, we’re adding chemicals on top of the processing to preserve things, we are really not eating the same foods that our parents ate. And we really have to go back to the beginning to eat fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, meat that hasn’t had hormones I even forgot to list that one and make a lot of our own stuff or make it really easy. Go online and order raw food because with raw food, it has to be organic. It’s not processed so there are no preservatives in it as well. And that’s why I push raw food because it seems to bypass all the horrible things that people are doing to food these days and just gives you really fresh clean food.

ANDREA: And the good thing about raw, too, is that it keeps its enzymes intact which is another amazing point about raw. Carol, I want to move on to page 89 because this is probably one of my favorite parts of the book, although I mean there are so many great parts. But, you talk about coffee enemas and the reason why I love it so much is it’s you talking about it. About the fact that you don’t drink coffee so I’m a huge fan of enemas and I know people who I’ve spoken to about it are like “Ew! What?!” Let’s talk a little bit about coffee enemas. Coming from someone like yourself I literally had the biggest smile on my face when I read it. So, tell us a little bit about what they are and what the benefits are.

CAROL: (Laughing) You know after my long explanation of the food, I thought you guys might have fallen asleep but I can see that you were already ready to pounce on this about the coffee enemas (laughing) I mean, it is funny. I mean the thing that gets me all the time is how people can view something that the body does as icky? I mean it’s the body. The body does what the body does. Everything the body does is incredible. It’s a miracle I mean, you can’t you can’t make a body. It’s just mind-blowing what the body can do, so for people to go “Ew!” “Ew enemas. I’m going to poop?!” it just makes me laugh. (laughing) Because it's totally not in touch with the fact that everybody poops. It’s just something we all do, you know? But what I like about the coffee enema in this day and age, is it’s so hard to keep it clean. It’s so hard to keep the toxins out of the body and I really believe that the coffee enema is a very big pull in detoxing and I don’t totally agree with high colonics. I’ve had a lot friends who got very ill on high colonics because they didn’t prepare the body for it.

    ANDREA: Hmm. Interesting.

CAROL: They didn’t prepare the body for it. They didn’t open up the intestines and allow the body to prepare to accept that much water and that high up and if you have diabetes, you should never do a high colonic because the valves are very weak, could be very weak, in your intestines and they could back up and then flow up into your stomach. You know, I had that happen to my father-in-law, so you have to be very careful about high colonics. What a coffee enema is, is a simple way--it only really cleanses out the bottom part of your intestine but what it does is, it stimulates the liver, which doesn’t really happen when you drink coffee, but it does happen if you use it in the other way. You put it in the other end. (laughing) and what it does is the veins the venous veins around the liver actually absorb the caffeine from the coffee. It stimulates the liver to kick out bile and bacteria and all kinds of gunk and then it washes it away. And this might not happen, if you don’t stimulate the liver to do that so every day that poor liver is collecting junk and it’s not able to spit it out and this is the only way that I could think of that I believe can help with that issue.

ANDREA: Well, Carol, how often should people be doing coffee enemas?

CAROL: Well, you know, you can overdo them. I mean, I read online somewhere that the only people who have ever died from doing coffee enemas are people who did them 3 and 4 times a day and I understand with anorexia and other psychological problems that people want to feel skinny and it just does. When you do a coffee enema in the morning, it picks up your energy and you just feel so skinny and energetic and sexy and ready to go. I know, from something so yucky you can feel so great. It’s amazing. But, yeah, you can overdo any kind of enemas or high colonics or anything like that because it can really deplete the system. So you know…and by the way this used to be in the Merck Nurses Handbook. And, apparently--I was told by Dr. Gonzales I believe--that they took it out of the Merck Nurses Handbook due to space, not because they didn’t believe it didn’t work. So, it’s shocking that they took out something that, in my view, is so necessary to detox the body to stay safe.

ANDREA: Now, I totally agree and we have an article on Naturally Savvy about enemas. I’m a huge fan and I’m glad you included it in your book. So, Carol, we have under a minute--actually about a minute left--I want to just talk a little bit about cancer prevention. I know that you interviewed Ty Bollinger, who is a friend of mine/ I absolutely adore him. He’s got now a cancer docu series out for those of you who are listening who want to learn about the truth about cancer. Tell us a little bit about cancer prevention and what are some of the things that you recommend in your book on page 74?

CAROL: Well, you know it depends on what type of cancer we’re talking about because Kim Horton got in there and talked about how to prevent breast cancer and some of the things she’s doing to help prevent breast cancer. In my view. Cancer is a very acidic inflammatory condition in the body and if we can reverse that inflammatory condition, I believe that we can heal ourselves. And, therefore, I believe that the raw food diet or, you know, an alkaline diet, if you will, is a very important tool as is, by the way, the coffee enema and detoxing as is several detoxes that can cleanse out the bod, alkaline it out, and reverse a lot of these problems. By the way aging is an inflammatory problem, so I believe alkalining out the body, can, in fact, anti-age us.

ANDREA: You did very well, Carol.

CAROL: Did I make it in time? Did I get that in in under a minute?

ANDREA: You did. You did it! This show just goes by way too fast but we’ll pick it up next time. Thank you for being on our show today. Carol. You can learn more about Carol. Your organic search is over. Here's Naturally Savvy with health experts, Andrea Donsky and Lisa Davis.

LISA: It has been a long, cold winter for so many of us all over the country. One of the things that I miss most is walking barefoot on the earth. I am such a nature girl. It has been really tough, but I can see little bits of grass here and there and I am very excited.

We're all so excited to have the wonderful shaman, Isabella Stoloff. She's going to be joining us once a month on the show. The first Wednesday of the month in the last segment and we're so thrilled.

    Hello there.

SHAMAN: Hi! Hi! Hi! Thank you for having me again and having me on as a regular. Wow!

LISA: Yay! Oh, we're so thrilled. And, we're going to have to walk barefoot in the grass together because seriously. Now, you're in the L.A. area, I understand?

SHAMAN: I'm in Orange County. So, Orange County is south of L.A. The OrangeCountyHealingCenter.com is where you can find me and it's still my small home in [inaudible 1:14] then you know about where I am. South of L.A. But, it's so great.

LISA: You can walk barefoot a lot.

SHAMAN: Yes. Well, Andrea, do you want to tell them what happened?

ANDREA: Oh, well, we had a really good time. For me, it was so interesting because I wanted to really understand what a shaman was. Isabella took me back to the Center. I mean, the energy is just incredible. She gave me a stone and she did a bit of healing on me. Unfortunately, we were in a bit of a time crunch.

    SHAMAN: We (inaudible)

ANDREA: But, she did do a healing on me.

    LISA: How exciting.

    SHAMAN: Yes. Yes.

ANDREA: We had a little bit of play in there, too. We had some fun.

SHAMAN: I brought her out the back yard so that she could see the medicine wheel and see the Orange County Healing Center. And, Lisa. You're next.

    LISA: Yay! Sign me up.

    SHAMAN: You're next.

LISA: Oh, it sounds lovely. I definitely want to come.

SHAMAN: I sent you guys a couple of links—I don't know if you had a chance to look at them. I'm obviously not going to be able to say them right now, unfortunately, but it's all on earthing. So, there's a man-made earthing mat. I prefer, actually, to put my feet in the ground but for those of you that are in the winter months and only have the snow, look up "earthing mats" and find out how to get one of those because I'm hearing they're all the rage. The links that I sent you all through the email, on that page, shows pictures of yours cells and how they change when you're on the earthing mat. So, same way as they change when you're on the earth. So, today's show is about how to heal yourself through the earth and I just believed in it hysterically, you know? My thing is I listen to spirit and I listen to my own intuition and it always says, "You know, you're having a hard day. Get outside and put your feet in the dirt. Walk on the grass. Actually stick your feet in the mud." And, it actually can reduce lots of inflammation in the body. It can reduce any kind of illness that you're having. So, you know, think about it. In the olden days, all we did was walk for miles and miles and miles and walk for miles and miles and miles and sleep on the ground, right? Now, we're either in little cubicles or we're hanging out of our home or we're in an office and inside of a building more often than not. Trying to get to the gym, maybe, to work out. How many of you are gym rats out there? You're still not getting the benefits of the earth. So, Mother Earth is a living, breathing organism just as we are. I've always felt like we are made up of the earth in some way. So, now, scientific studies are coming out. They're taking pictures of your cells. It's a proven fact.

ANDREA: You know, it's interesting. I just recently got into earthing, probably about 6 months ago and I bought a product, a mat, and then something we could sleep on. I gave it to my son to sleep on. When I was in Mexico a couple of months ago, I made sure to walk every day on the beach barefoot to make sure that I was connecting with the earth. So, I believe in it and I try hard to do it. What are some of the ways that people can do it if they're not on a beach and they're in their office or their home? What are some easy things that people can do in order to do the earthing?

SHAMAN: Well, right away, I said the earthing mats. Whoever that gentleman is that created it. Just look up "earthing mat" on Google. I'm sure you'll find it. What I do, very simply is, I go outside. I put my feet in the dirt. I make a little mud pile. Now, for those of you, again, stuck in the snow, probably even just having some snow probably. Even snow has some kind of benefits. Going out and snowshoeing.

    LISA: Oh, that's interesting.

SHAMAN: Or, being out with nature. It's really about connecting to the trees. Connecting to nature and I know in the past everybody says, "Oh, that hippie dippie stuff. Woo woo…" But it's now being scientifically proven that your cell has memory; that your cell is a living, breathing organism just as Mother Earth is. So, I like to have a sea salt bath and if you go to, if you can't jump in the ocean, you can make your own at home. So, if you go to my website, OCHealthingCenter.com, and look at my shaman's log, there will be a little search menu and you can put in "fire ceremony sea salt bath". Now, fire ceremony, another very powerful way to release. I have an "at home" method for people that don't have access to a fire or are living in the cold. Just don't breathe it in. It's toxic. (laughter) But, I created this little blog about how to have an "at home" fire and do a fire ceremony for yourself and how to have a sea salt bath with baking soda and get up and rinse in after. So, in the old days, we used to take care of…Mother Earth takes care of herself with fire and flood. Fire and flood. That's Mother Earth, right? In the old days, we sat around the fire; talked about the hunt. We jumped in the lake and oceans to rinse off our bodies. So now, you can get back to the ways of old just by following that little blog that I wrote of how to have an "at home" fire and a sea salt bath. And, another great way, I know you girls knew I was going to do this, but I'm taking everyone to Peru in October. So, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley and you want to get connected to your soul. You want to find health and wellness from the earth? Come with me to Peru October 6-16. Same website. OCHealthingCenter.com. You can find the information. If you mention Lisa Davis and Andrea Donsky, you will still be eligible for the $600 discount because after March 1, the price went up.

So, congratulations to Naturally Savvy Radio listeners, if you'd like to come.

LISA: That's quite a savings. Wow! That's exciting.

SHAMAN: You can get [inaudible 7:39] So, really…Okay, so we talk about consciousness, right? We talk about being conscious in our thoughts and conscious with our words. Be conscious with your earth. Earth Day is coming up. 4/20 is Earth Day. Connect to nature in some way every day. Give your thanks to the earth. She's a living, breathing organism just as you are. There is really…The only…Maybe—maybe she even has consciousness. I was about to say the only difference between us and Mother Earth is we have a conscious mind but, who knows? Who knows? Mother Earth may have a conscious mind of her own and the more we connect to her, the more we connect to nature, the better off we'll be. Yes.

ANDREA: Isabella, we have about 20 seconds left and I just want to talk about really, really quickly, would stones help people to connect like to earth as well? Is it "to earth" or "to earthing" or "earthing". I don't know, I guess, what the proper way to say it would be, but would stones help?

SHAMAN: Would stones help for earthing? Yes. Absolutely. You guys, or, Andrea, saw my house filled with ginormous crystals. Get yourself some stones. Start to look up crystals, look up jasper. Yellow jasper is a great way to connect when I am holding a stone in my hand. You guys, breath and intention is everything. Go outside today. Pick up a stone. Throw all your troubles away. Stand in whatever earth you can and love yourself. Love every inch of yourself.
ANDREA: Thank you, Isabella. Thank you for being on the show. Learn more at OCHealingCenter.com. You can also follow Isabella on Twitter @IsabellaStoloff.

Whether you are new to the healthy living lifestyle or a healthy living veteran, this is the place for the honest answers to your questions. Naturally Savvy with registered holistic nutritionist, Andrea Donsky and health journalist, Lisa Davis, on RadioMD.com.

LISA: We are so thrilled to have Kelly Lebrock back on the program. She joins us every month and Andrea and I were so moved by a talk she gave at the UN about her own personal experiences with violence against women and things that have happened to her.

Kelly, we're just so thrilled to have you back.

KELLY: Thank you. It's lovely to be speaking to be speaking Boston and to two beautiful ladies. I tell you, speaking to the United Nations, I think rousted my mother from the dead. She loved politics. She loved government and to be speaking there was such an honor and they didn't even ask to read my speech before I read it, so that was even more of an honor. But, yes. It was very moving. A lot of women had been abused who were in the room. There were about 300 dignitaries and ambassadors and just to be in a room filled with such love with women all trying to move, to try and stop this hideous violence against women and children.

LISA: It brought tears to my eyes, really.

KELLY: And the beautiful Ilene Fisher, who is a designer, gave me some amazing clothes to wear for the event as well. I have to say, Ilene Fisher rocks because I am not usually comfortable in clothing, but I felt very comfortable in her things. That's for sure.

LISA: Oh, the clothing was beautiful. You looked just absolutely, absolutely gorgeous.

KELLY: Smoke and mirrors. Smoke and mirrors.

    LISA: No.

KELLY: But, I have to say that I think in this society today that most of us know about most things, but there was a talk that some beautiful lady gave from Cameroon who talked about breast ironing where the grandmother takes the young girl's breasts and stones them with hot stones that she's put in boiling water and she pounds down the tissue of the mammary glands so that the girls won't be looked at by these hideous people that rape. Is that horrific?

LISA: Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.

    ANDREA: That is horrific.

KELLY: One of the things in my speech was that we're not going to be able to do much with the monsters that are doing this right now, but we can try and stop these young boys who are watching their papas beat their mamas. We have to try to help them from the sandpit to 3rd, 4th, 5th grade. There have to be classes where these kids know that it's not cool to hit a woman. It's not cool to bully. We have to make these people targets so that we know, you know, to stay away from them.

ANDREA: You know, something you said in your speech which, again, was super moving is you talked about listening to an abuser who took responsibility and you said how that really changed things for you. Tell us a little bit about that experience.

KELLY: Well, I can really do that part. My ability to feel my own pain came only about one day when a complete and absolute stranger stood up at a charity dinner to address the room of us blood-spattered women to apologize for his hideous part in beating his partner time and time again. His bravery and courage to face us all, somehow, for me flipped a little hope and healing into a very dark and sordid secret. His tears and mine fell together and I was, for the first time, thankful to an abuser for his promise and mission to stop himself and others from the monster that fuels their hands.

ANDREA: You know, what do you say? Words leave me. Speechless when I hear something like that. What I want to hear, and Lisa and I are both interested. We'd love to hear a little bit about your experience because for those who are listening who didn't necessarily hear your speech and I encourage all of you, we're going to put a link on Facebook of your speech at the UN and I encourage you all to go and listen to it. But, tell us a little bit about your experience and why you're so passionate about this topic.

KELLY: Well, I grew up in a very bloody childhood. When your mommy beats you, then it sets off a very bad dynamic for being a grown up. You know? And, being beaten early on sets up a lot of trauma and post-traumatic stress and you sort of go into that. At 15 ½, I started to be raped and then you become a victim and then you become a victim again and again and again. Then I listen to people like Bill Cosby who's not even being investigated and that is a crying shame that in this country there's not even an investigation, yet 20 something women have come out. The abuse that I have suffered I will try and stop that for other people because it is just not…It's not on and it has to stop. Social media, I think, can help a lot with that.

Yes. I've been beaten and raped a number of times. It'll be in my book which, you know, hopefully will be coming out next year. I want to help people. It's not alright to hurt inside. I looked like the perfect woman, but it was just a big burden to hold all that nasty stuff inside and I just want to help other people. So, here we go.

    LISA: I'm so glad.

KELLY: Also, before I did my speech, I had this crazy massage. Nobody gets a speech before they go into the UN and it was called somatic release response and the guy worked on me and had me crying in 5 minutes. Amir Saloom or something. A healer. I had a healing before I went out and spoke all these hideous things and it's sort of great the way things come about when you need them, you know?

LISA: Oh, definitely. Well, what do you recommend for people to start healing? It's so incredibly difficult. You mentioned PTSD and I actually know some women that have that from trauma, from childhood and rape and other experiences.

KELLY: Most people have it. I would look into transcendental meditation. It's not goofy, weird, strange. It is helping a lot of children in war torn areas. Transcendental meditation. Look up the David Lynch Foundation. That can put you into a beautiful, quiet place where you can start to feel the healing; where you can start to feel the forgiving. You don't have to forget but you do have to forgive because that's the only way the journey ends. Otherwise, these monsters win.

ANDREA: You know, just listening to you speak, it's so profound. Again, for those of you who are listening, Kelly's mission has really been to end this violence against women.

Kelly, tell us a little bit more about what your speech at the UN was about. Like, what could people do? If they're listening to you talk and they're like, "Okay. I need to do something now. What could people do to take action?" Well, it's a very dangerous situation. There was a beautiful woman from India there and she was telling me that her husband was abusing her and I'm like, "You're not in India anymore. This is America. This is why you came to America. It's not cool for your kids to see your husband treat you this way." People are too scared to talk. I don't know where to send people. Maybe they have to go and…I don't know because a lot of the time, too, these people, if they find out that the woman that's getting beaten, if the husband finds out that they're talking about it, they might do something even worse. You basically have to pull yourself together. Get the hell out of there. Take your kids. It's not okay to feel the way that you feel. Get help. Go to relatives. I don't know how bad it is, but if it's bad, get the hell out of there.

LISA: Yes. Those are true words of wisdom and it makes such a difference. You sometimes hear people say, "Well, why do women stay?" Sometimes they don't have relatives or they don't know where to go.

KELLY: Well, we're scared. We're scared.

    LISA: Exactly.

KELLY: We're downtrodden. We have no self-esteem. Self-esteem is our friend. We need to feel good inside and that does not happen when you're staying in a bad place. You just have to take the bull by the horns and get the hell out of there. I don't care what it takes, just get out.

LISA: Now, Kelly, I know you left your home at a young age, correct?

KELLY: Fifteen and a half, I left home. At 16, I was paying my parents' mortgage. You know? But, my mom had a lot of love in her, but she had a very violent hand and temper. I still feel like I grew up in a house of love which is funny. There was a lot of love, but there was a lot of smacking, as well. I mean, my arm was opened up. I needed stitches and actually, to punish her, I didn't go to the doctor. We didn't go to the hospital, I just left the wound opened so that she could see. I guess I sort of punished her. But then, my mother was in a very, very violent childhood as well. Six poor Irish kids, you know, one bath on Fridays, all 6 kids took the same water. Her parents were very violent. So, you know, you live the life you've learned. But it's not okay. It's not okay and it was very important to me that I did not hit my kids. I may have smacked them a couple of times on the butt, but usually not, because when you're beaten, you tend to do the same things. You can control it. You have to control it.

    ANDREA: Well, Kelly, unfortunately…

KELLY: And that crazy stuff about henna having lead in it. We're silly enough. We don't need any more metal.

ANDREA: Yes. Definitely. Dr. Fratilone is pretty awesome.

Kelly, we're out of time today, but as always, we love having you on the show and continue doing your incredible life's work and we're going to post a link to your UN speech. It was fantastic, as we said.

Your organic search is over. Here's Naturally Savvy with health experts, Andrea Donsky and health journalist, Lisa Davis.

LISA: Years ago, I went to see an osteopath and it made such a huge difference. We are so thrilled to have Vicky and, Vicky, I'm going to ask you to say your last name for me because I do not want to butcher it.

    VICKY: Vicky Vlachonis.

LISA: Vlachonis. What a beautiful name. Well, Vicky we are so thrilled to have you on the program. We're excited to talk about your book, The Body Doesn't Lie: A Three-Step Program to Releasing Chronic Pain. Reflect, Release and Radiate. Love it. So glad you're here with us on Naturally Savvy.

    VICKY: Hi, how are you?

LISA: We're wonderful. How are you?

    VICKY: I'm good, thank you.

ANDREA: So, Vicky, tell us a little bit about what osteopathy is.

VICKY: So, as an osteopath, we use the musculoskeletal system as a decoder ring to diagnose and understand different body dysfunctions. So, based on how our patients react to treatment, certain touches, we can tell if certain organs are functioning, if there's a blockage. It's more about prevention. So, even before an illness shows up, sometimes there are little signs and signals that we pick up.

ANDREA: Now, how would somebody work that? It's, basically, they work it into their regular routine if they're seeing, let's say, an acupuncturist or a chiropractor? Is it something that you add in to your regular routine of check-ups? Or, how would someone integrate that into their regular lifestyle?

VICKY: Yes. Exactly. You want to use acupuncture, osteopathy, massage, all these different modalities in a way to look at the structure because in osteopathy we believe that structure governs function, so we want to check the realignment. If, for example, somebody comes in with neck pain or low back pain, we want to really look into what is the source of the pain like in my book, The Body Doesn't Lie, and reflect. I take a whole picture and look at what the person is eating; how they're feeling; if there's a spinal misalignment. So, yes, they might be going to an acupuncturist or having a massage therapist, but it's also great to check if their feet are flat; how their whole spine aligns; the whole picture. What they're eating; if they're seeing a registered dietician, to check what food could be causing more pain in their life and, therefore, increasing inflammation or making them more stressed or more angry and, therefore, again, our emotions, live in our nervous system. So, we talk about the mind/body connection, but, actually, it's one in the same. I see a lot of clients with pain and when they're feeling pain, those emotions need to be unlocked through their tissues as sometimes we say.

LISA: I completely agree. It sounds like bio-energetic in a way.

VICKY: It's similar. I think, again, going back to structure governing function and understanding the skin and the muscles and the tissues and muscle energy and how our body reacts and if there's good blood flow, oxygen, circulation, again, the rule of the archery supreme. So, is there good blood flow? Is there good circulation? Oxygen.

ANDREA: You know, Vicky, I've had osteopathy done before and I absolutely love it and what I love about it so much is that it's so gentle. Like, you lie on a table and you're working, primarily on the neck, and you can talk to this, obviously, much better than I can, but as someone who has had it done, I find that it's one of those therapies that is so relaxing, but yet, it gets so much done.

VICKY: I think that's exactly it. Again, our sympathetic nervous system, so our, as I said, our emotions are born in our nervous system and the system that physically runs up and down our spine and branches into every organ and limb helps with our sympathetic system, so, it's always all our stress, our get up and go, our fight or fright and so many of us overuse this system and the idea is gently, to calm down the body and get the body to rest and digest and get the power sympathetic nervous system, basically. Relaxing our facial muscles; relaxing our body so we're able to slow down our heart rate. We're able to decrease our cortisol, our stress hormones and look at, again, the whole picture. Reflect. What is causing pain in your life? It could be physical, but maybe there's an emotion connected to your neck and it could be fear and it could be anger or it could be low back pain and you haven't been to a doctor to check your ovaries or your intestine is blocked or constipated. So, we're looking at each section of the body as a little decoder. It tell us, "Okay, my neck is in pain, but maybe I'm low in vitamin D or I haven't been to the doctor to check my bone density and I have family history of osteoporosis." I always say, "Pain uncovers the truth." But pain is a signal from the body that something is not right.

LISA: You know, I'd love for you to get more into the release because that's where I think it makes such a huge difference. We hang on to so much in our body and when you're able to let it go, it's like you can suddenly breathe. You will notice that the pain does improve.

VICKY: Yes. So, in release, the second stage of The Body Doesn't Lie, again, once you've uncovered the source of your pain, you have to have the courage and discipline to release it. Releasing what's causing pain, and it could be releasing the inflammation through what you're eating and getting rid of, those sugars or those hidden sugars, in the cows milk or the growth hormones or maybe trying to reduce wheat that causes bloatedness; or it could be even releasing and getting rid of negative people in your life that are causing more stress. So, releasing all relationships. Relationships with food. Relationships could be your boss; it could be your husband. Something is not working, so releasing it and in the program, what I give is just simple tips of medication or have a salt and pepper bath soak; and Epsom salt bath 10 minutes every night to just help you let go of the stress of the day. Or, even trying a massage with self-healing trigger points. I've added some self-healing trigger points in the book which we can do alone, so instead of reaching out for a pill, why don't you smell some peppermint oil or try this trigger point in your hand that will help you release your headache or help you sleep better before reaching out for a sleeping pill? Have that bath. Sit in the bath for 10 minutes. Reflect on what needs to let go—to be able to radiate and go into the third stage of revitalizing your body and encouraging all the natural health processes. That's why the third stage is called "radiate". Not only because you're living a pain-free life, but you're growing and you're able to develop your physical and emotional strength. I feel it's more about also becoming productive and stronger in all relationships, even once you feel that radiance and you've found your passion, your purpose and you've let go of what's causing pain in your life, you can help other people and give back.

LISA: Oh, that's so beautiful. Gosh, I'm really excited about your book. I think this is the way to go and I think when people have a guide like this, it can make such a difference in their life. I'm dealing with an injury right now. Luckily, it's not chronic, but it's been really getting me down. I've talked about it before on the show. So, being able to do these steps, I think, would really be helpful to me and so many people out there.

VICKY: Great. I'm here to help. Again, we could go into it.

LISA: Come on over. I'll give you my address.

    VICKY: I'll come over.

ANDREA: So funny. Vicky, we have about maybe, you know, a minute and a half left, if that. I just want to get an idea of what type of supplements you use. Do you recommend supplements as an osteopath? Is it something that you believe people should incorporate into their daily life? You know, things life fish oil or things like probiotics. What are some of the things you recommend?

VICKY: Fish oil and probiotics. I always kind of look into the research. So, I always call into my UCLA colleagues at the Digestive Diseases Department and if they've done research on probiotics. I personally use the Renew Life probiotics which is 50 billion. Again, probiotics will help just get that flora, move the gut, improve that gut flora because all the research now, with the microbiome and the actual research of the bacteria in the gut is even linking diseases of the future and inflammation. So, I love the Omega 3 fish oils. I love the Barlean swirl which I add in my smoothies and definitely believe in the probiotics. Again, if there's research behind it, I'm all for it.

LISA: Yes. We love Barlean's, too. We work with Barlean's really closely. Great company. Well, thank you, Vicky. We're out of time for today. Wow. That went by really fast and thank you for being able to be on the show so last minute. We really appreciate it.

PATRICIA: Well, my dad, Paul Bragg, was the originator of health food stores in 1912 and then he became the father of the heath movement throughout America. He started the first herbal teas. He put out the first vitamins, the first health cosmetics without all the fillers and dangerous things. And, guess what? He, then, went across America, the Bragg Health Crusade, and said, "Who wants to open the first health food store in Pennsylvania?" and that was, guess who it was? It was little mama papa, a yogurt shop called the Lackzoom and now, that's GNC. Guess what? They're in every city in America.

Then, he went all over America and I did, also, with my father when I got old enough and got all my education and degrees, then I went. We traveled 8 months every year, health crusading across America and the world. I loved every minute of it.

    LISA: That's so awesome.

ANDREA: So, Patricia, then, what would you say—I know this is off topic with what we were going to talk about today, but I just find your story so interesting. What would you say would be your top 3 secrets to really maintaining a healthy lifestyle?

PATRICIA: Well, let's see. You have 640 muscles. If you don't use them, you lose them. They lose their tone, their ability to keep active and going. You need to exercise; good posture; don't sit with your legs crossed; lift your chest up; don't wear wired bras, gals. It cuts off the circulation.

    ANDREA: Yes.

    LISA: Good one.

PATRICIA: There's a book called Dressed to Kill about wired bras and breast cancer. It's a proven fact. It cuts of the circulation. Deep breathing is important. I have Katy Perry, the Beach Boys, Carrie Underwood. I have Metropolitan Opera singers. Oh, deep breathing is so important. And, you are what you think with your computer. Oh, your brain. Happy, healthy thoughts; productive thoughts. You are what you think; what you do. It's so important. This is the Bragg Healthy Lifestyle: you are what you eat; what you drink; what you breathe; what you say; what you do. It's as simple as this: what you eat and drink today walks and talks tomorrow. So, when you put it in your mouth, put it to the test. Health or sickness or obesity or diabetes. Think about it. We all should be our own health captains.

ANDREA: Absolutely. Those are very wise words. You know what I love about you, Patricia, and your company. I've been in the natural health industry for 15 years. I just saw you, actually. I didn't go over and say hello, but I saw you at Expo West. You know, I saw you at a distance and now, next time I see you, I will go over and say hello and I love that you are so ahead of your time in terms of the products that you come out with. The apple cider vinegar, obviously, the Bragg's and now, we want to talk about dehydration and staying hydrated and the importance. I just want to give you kudos and your dad, obviously, who started it all. I just love what you guys are doing.

PATRICIA: Well, thank you. Thank you. Yes, I tell you what. Your health is your wealth. I have many billionaires, many billionaires, that follow us. Donald Trump and on and on. I kept J. C. Penney going to almost 100. Conrad Hilton. Dr. Scholls, the foot doctor. Oh my gosh, in their later years, they realize their health is their wealth. That's what I want the mothers of America to know. That they should be the captains of their childrens' health and guide them into being healthy their whole lives.

Now, this is important: that they teach their children early by living examples of exercise, keeping fit, healthy, no obesity, no diabetes, no high blood pressure—things that are striking so many Americans today because of their unhealthy lifestyle. You see?

LISA: Oh, yes. Definitely. Where does water play in this equation?

PATRICIA: Oh my gosh. Right this minute, I'm 70% water. What do you think of that? You know, you see a dried prune? You know, it gets all wrinkled. The beautiful plum—plum prune—is full of water and as it dries, they dry it in the sun and it's dried and all wrinkled. Well, you see my face, it's like a polished apple because, you see, I have 8 glasses of water a day. Children, you have to be sure that they're getting ample water. I believe you had on there, Willard's Water. Wonderful water.

    LISA: Yes.

PATRICIA: And, purified water. No fluoridation or toxins. We wrote the book, Water: The Shocking Truth That Can Save Your Life. Water is the key to all your body functions: your heart, your circulation, digestion, bones and joints, your muscles, metabolism, stimulation, sex, glands, nerves, energy and the most important one, your elimination. Do you know that 50% of Americans are constipated? Why? Because they don't drink water. Oh, no. They want coke. They want caffeine. Coffee. Alcohol. You know what it does? It dehydrates you.

ANDREA: It definitely does. What is the quantity? How much water should everybody be drinking a day?

PATRICIA: Well, I feel 8 glasses a day. It can be 6 ounces of 6-8 a day. Now, I'm 5" tall, 95 pounds. I'm a miniature, but I thrive on 8 glasses, but basically, I could do with 6 because I'm tiny. Do you understand?

    ANDREA: Yes.

PATRICIA: But, big, tall men, they can use 10-12, you see? Now, our apple cider vinegar, balances the acid alkaline balance and what the apple cider vinegar properties in 400 BC used as apple cider vinegar to detox and cleanse and heal the body. So, therefore, three of my drinks, I put the Bragg Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with a mother. Now, people say, "What's that mother?" I said, "That's a miracle enzyme that the commercial manufacturers of vinegar started killing in the 40s and 50s." People looked at that vinegar and said, "Ew! That looks dirty." And the vinegar manufacturers said, "Oh, we'll kill her. We'll boil her, heat her, filter her out and kill her." So, therefore, it's no good. No good. You want a live vinegar and that helps balance your acid alkaline balance which is so important to the body. It helps with the weight normalizing and water—be sure that all of you drink it—not coffee; not caffeine; not coke; not sugared diet drinks. The Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar drinks are sold in the health food store and supermarkets across America.

ANDREA: Thank you, Patricia. You know, we would love to have you back on because I would love to do a show on apple cider vinegar and the benefits of alkaline and acidity.
