Chances are you haven’t heard of sarcopenia before, yet you need to be informed about it.

Sarcopenia is better known as age-related muscle loss, strength and functionality. That may not sound so bad, but this decline in muscle and strength are important risk factors for disability and increased mortality as we age.

The month of May is packed with several Mental Health Awareness themes of which “National Anxiety and Depression Awareness Week” is the biggest.

Of these two conditions, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States. According to the ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America), anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults over the age of 18 or more than 18 percent of the population.

Even though there are effective means of managing anxiety, only 36.9 percent of sufferers are actually doing something about it. In fact, it is not uncommon for those with an anxiety disorder to suffer from depression or someone with depression to suffer from anxiety.

It amazes me how many men I meet who don’t know much about their prostate. It seems the only men who do are those who have a problem with it.

Many people also don’t know how to spell it – many spell it “prostrate” – which is a physical position, not the gland found in men. Then let’s say you’re good at spelling and know what it does, you might not know where it is located.

Don’t be upset or embarrassed if you fall into any of these groups. You are in the minority if you know any of the information above.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and a great time to educate ourselves on how to maintain a healthy prostate.
