Getting To Know Our Providers - Kayce Fuhrman

Kayce Fuhrman BSN, RN: Hi, I'm Kayce Fuhrman and I am a registered nurse and I work for Memorial Hospital, as the Director of Diabetes Services and Diabetes Educator. I went to nursing school in Springfield, Missouri at St. John's and Southwest Baptist University School of Nursing and got my Associate's Degree there. And then I completed my Bachelor's Degree online several years later. My dad was sick with cancer when I was a teenager. So we spent a lot of time in healthcare settings and I was just really touched by the way that I saw nurses take care of him, as well as be there for my mom and help support the family through that whole process.

So I've been a nurse for about 20 years. Have worked in several different areas, but I've always had an interest in diabetes education and so this opportunity presented itself and so I was glad to accept it. So I think it's really important that we start looking at more prevention instead of treating disease, you know, when it's more advanced.

I think we can do a lot more on the front end to try to just be healthier and like I said, to take steps to prevent and delay those onset of diseases. So that is one thing that I like about diabetes education is, you know, the trying to identify people that are at risk or that have pre-diabetes and really trying to stop that progression or delay it.

And then another aspect, is just trying to meet people where they're at. We're all so different and we have different lifestyles and different backgrounds and it's really looking at individuals and seeing how we can you know, best approach things with them and what works for them and you know, what struggles they're having and really more of a team approach working with them, putting people with them that can help support, and again figuring out what works best for them.

I am married and we have two kids. One's in high school, one's in middle school. We are active in our church and our kids keep us busy with different activities. So it's a fun stage of life to be doing things with them as they're older and just kind of seeing what they're going to do next. Personally, I like to travel. I like to see just different places and how other people live and just to experience new things that are different than what I know. And then I really enjoy reading and then just spending time with our family.

I've actually just been here about eight months. It's very community focused. It's just this desire to see the community be healthier, to provide for people you know, to help better their health. But then also, when they're struggling, when they're in those times that they need care and they need it close to home, that we're here to help support as best we can.

And then help connect them with resources if you know, it's beyond what we can provide. So just that community focus. I feel like this organization strives for excellence and so I appreciate being part of that.
