Getting To Know Our Providers - Katie Ruebush

Katie Ruebush: Hi. My name is Katie Ruebush and I'm a physical therapist at Memorial Medical Clinic. I did undergrad at St. Ambrose University in the Quad Cities where I majored in exercise science and human performance and fitness. And then, I went to WashU in St. Louis for grad school where I got a doctorate in physical therapy.

I've always been an athlete and I knew when I was looking at different careers that I wanted to do something in exercise. And so, I started job shadowing at a local hospital with physical therapy and just learned that I loved not just the athletic population, but geriatrics and orthopedic patients and neurological conditions.

But really, I drifted towards my specialty in women's health because I've always been a feminist. And even from a young age, I was always just determined to do everything my older brother was doing, really into sports and athletics. And knew that once I got into PT school, when I found that there was this specialty in women's health, that I just had to do that.

I think you have to look at a patient in a very holistic way. A lot of the patients that come to see me are very complex, and it's not just one thing causing their symptoms, and we really need to address lots of different things. You know, if they're coming to me for pelvic floor dysfunction, it's not just that they maybe are having pelvic pain, but they're also having some back pain or hip pain, maybe their diet needs modified. Also, just alignment and treating the whole body and not just the one symptom that maybe is their chief complaint.

So, we have two little boys and we have a small family farm that we enjoy being a part of with crops and cattle. And we definitely spend a ton of time at the farm. Because when you have cows, there's always something that you have to do. I grew up in a very rural area. Now, I'm living in it. And I really like the idea of working for a small rural hospital that is giving back to the community. And we do live in an area where sometimes you have to travel pretty far to find different specialties. And one thing that Ada Bair has done an extremely great job of is bringing specialties to this small community. I think I'm the only person doing pelvic floor physical therapy within maybe 30 or 50 miles from here. And I just really like being able to offer a niche specialty to people close to home and close to where I grew up with and where I'm raising my family.
