Estrogen has become somewhat of a "buzz word" in our society lately. Women take estrogen to help ease the symptoms of menopause, or as a method of birth control. But you're also being exposed to other sources of estrogen, via pesticides, cleaning products and other chemicals. These types of estrogen are classified as xenoestrogens, and can be detrimental to your health.
Having too much estrogen -- of any kind -- can wreak havoc on your body.
But then enter the concept of phytoestrogen.
While the typical estrogen found in your body is steroidal, phytoestrogens are plant-based and may actually be beneficial for your health. They are found in such things as soybeans, flax seeds, nuts, hops and red clover.
The theory is that phytoestrogens act as adaptogens, and can help balance out your estrogen levels by blocking stronger estrogens (i.e. xenoestrogens).
Phytoestrogens have not been associated with the typical side effects of stronger estrogens.
And, several epidemiological and experimental studies in animals and humans have suggested that consuming phytoestrogens may have protective effects on conditions such prostate and breast cancers..
The key is to make sure you're ingesting non-GMO phytoestrogens, and fewer than 150 mg of isoflavones daily.
