It's a no-brainer that excessive amounts of sugar can lead to weight gain. But did you know that it could also seriously damage your health?
You never think twice about the amount of sugar in your soda, fruit, treats and other snacks until all of a sudden you have a muffin top spilling over your jeans and your blood sugar levels have skyrocketed.
Did you know that the American Heart Association recommends women should consume no more than 100 sugar calories a day? Unfortunately, many individuals do not even come close to adhering to that rule. In fact, on average, the typical American consume 95-100 pounds of sugar each year.
That's right... pounds.
Statistics show that in 2010 adults consumed about 15 percent of their calories from added sugars.
What are some ways to cut back on sugar?
One food that can help reduce sugar intake is chia seeds. Chia seeds contain an omega-3 fatty acid that helps reduce inflammation in your body.
Chia seeds also have an enormous amount of fiber (10g per serving).
Dr. Holly and nutritionist, Sara Vance, discuss why it's important to watch your sugar intake, as well as ways you can reduce the amount of sugar you are eating on a daily basis.
