Compliance vs. Adherence: Doing Your Part to Change Your Health

More than likely whenever you have a health concern, there's going to be an option for a quick fix. This can be very true of modern medicine.

Unfortunately, it may seem more appealing to fill a prescription or undergo a surgery than to try less invasive methods first, such as alternative medicine or changing your lifestyle.

But, is it really the best option for you?

If you schedule an appointment at your doctor's office, it may feel like you're spending more time sitting in the waiting room than actually speaking to your doctor.

You might get less than 15 minutes to discuss how you've been feeling, and before you know it, you're rushed out the door with a prescription in your hand that is promised to fix your problem. You're compliant with what your doctor is telling you, even though the problem may persist.

Taking a medication is easy; but adhering to nutritional advice and lifestyle changes throughout the day can be hard. You must do your part in your relationship with your doctor to ensure your health success. More than ever in today's world, it is most important for you to be your own primary caregiver.

What are some ways to start doing that?

Truly listen to what your body is telling you, don't be afraid to ask questions, dig deeper into why you may have a specific health problem, and look for alternative ways to treat it.
