Currently, she is the Assistant Director of the United States Air Force Academy’s Human Performance Laboratory in Colorado Springs, CO, where she recently completed a ground breaking research study titled; “An Energy Balance and COPE Intervention with Division I Female Athletes.”  I was honored to present this research at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting in May 2014. A research article is currently under review for publication. As a result of this research and all of her educational and work-related experience, she has created a seminar presentation for athletes; What Every Female Athlete Should Know.  Finally, she will be presenting on this and other subjects at the National Conference of United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in AZ in December, 2014.

  • Guest Bio Janet Walberg RankinDr. Janet Walberg Rankin joined the Graduate School in August 2009. On campus, Dr. Rankin served as Chair of the Food, Nutrition, and Health Initiative during 2001. She was Acting Department Head for the department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise in Spring 2002. She was appointed as Associate Director in August 2003 and then Interim Director in October 2003-July 2006 of the new Institute for Biomedical and Public Health Sciences at Virginia Tech.

    Dr. Rankin is a Professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise at Virginia Tech. She received her academic training at Duke University (B.S. in Zoology 1977) and University of California at Davis (Ph.D. in Nutrition 1982). She has taught courses in Exercise Physiology, Preventive and Therapeutic Value of Exercise, Sports Nutrition, and Exercise Metabolism. She was awarded the Certificate of Teaching Excellence in 1993.

    Research from her laboratory is related to sports nutrition or interventions for obesity. The overarching goal of current research in her laboratory is to clarify the optimal nutritional strategy to reduce inflammation and related health complications. Specific interventions evaluated include variations of dietary macronutrient mix, energy balance, specific foods, and dietary supplements.

    Her involvement with professional organizations has included membership on the Executive Board and later as President of the Southeast Chapter of American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). She is a Fellow of ACSM, served as Vice President for ACSM, is an Associate Editor for the official ACSM journal, and has been a member or chair on many national committees for this organization. Dr. Rankin has served as a panelist for NASA Peer Review Services and USDA Intramural grant review of Diet and Disease Prevention and Health Promotion proposals. She was on the writing team for the revision of the ACSM position stand on exercise and obesity and on the Institute of Medicine committee charged with making recommendations related to use of dietary supplements in military personnel. She was a member of the Science Advisory Board for the Gatorade Sports Science Institute from 1996-2008.

  • Guest Bio Screen shot 2012-05-03 at 10.57.05 AM Jen in blue pearl 1Dr. Jennifer Sacheck is an Associate Professor of Nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. She also holds a faculty appointment in the Tisch College of Citizenship at Tufts. Dr. Sacheck earned her Master's degree in Exercise Science, her Ph.D. in Nutrition Science from Tufts University, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School in muscle physiology. She is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and an active member of The Obesity Society.

    Dr. Sacheck's research focuses on the impact of both diet and physical activity on health across the lifespan. Past research studies include examining the effects of nutrition and exercise on muscle inflammation and repair in young and older adults and on fitness and cardiovascular disease risk factors in children. With funding from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Sacheck is currently conducting a large clinical trial on vitamin D deficiency and associated health risks in youth. Other current research includes examining the impact of physical activity and cognitive health. She has authored several pivotal reports on obesity and physical inactivity in New England and was an appointed member of the Institute of Medicine's committee on Fitness and Health Outcomes in Youth. She teaches courses on Exercise Physiology and Nutritional Biochemistry to graduate students at the Friedman School. Dr. Sacheck also recently co-authored her first book on nutrition, fitness and health, Thinner This Year. She is a competitive Masters level rower and avid runner and frequently speaks to athletes of all ages on optimizing nutrition for performance.
