Melanie: Welcome to Fertility Talk with RSCNJ, the Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey. I'm Melanie Cole. And today, we have a provider profile for you. Joining me is Kelly Curtis. She's a physician's assistant with the Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey. Kelly, I'm so glad you joined the team. So tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to the Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey. Tell us a little bit about your career path before.
Kelly Curtis: Sure. Hi, thanks for having me. So, to start out with, I have a very diverse background. I went to school in Kettering College in Ohio. I did my PA school education there. I actually started out early in family medicine. I kind of wanted to solidify my general knowledge and education, and put all of that to use right out of PA school.
I shortly moved to New Jersey from Cincinnati four months after starting. My husband got a job out here, and we made the transition here in 2019. I actually started in orthopedics after we moved to New Jersey. Ultimately, that wasn't what I had wanted to do. And I was looking to change career paths and I've always had an interest in women's health. I loved my women's health rotation during PA school. It just wasn't an opportunity that we utilize or PAs utilized much in Ohio, not as much as nurse practitioners or midwives in the women's health setting. So I was very fortunate to find this opportunity here. And I was so excited. There's nothing better than bringing life into this world and helping people make families. So I was ecstatic to come across this opportunity. And I've been here for about two and a half months now. And it's been great. It's been so awesome and rewarding already. So it's been an awesome change for me.
Melanie: Well, that's excellent. Well done. You're going to love it there. So tell us a little bit about your philosophy of care. You mentioned bringing babies into the world, which is in my opinion just so awesome. Tell us a little bit about what you'd like patients to know about how you approach disease, wellness, and care for the whole person.
Kelly Curtis: First of all, I think every person should be treated as if they were your own family member. Every person is treated with respect, caring, empathy. I like to spend a lot of time with my patients and just to get to know them. I think that's helped build trust between the provider and the patients, as well as make it even more rewarding. I get to know them more as a person, outside of their medical history and just help find out what their goals and needs are, and help them reach, you know, whatever goal that is.
The fertility side of this is great, and it's exciting and awesome to help people start families. But also the side of this with chronic pelvic pain and helping those patients live a pain-free lifestyle and help them as well, I think it's important to be very understanding and open to whatever each individual goal is. Everyone has their different stories and I think it's important to spend a lot of time and listen to what they want.
Melanie: That's so wonderful. Now, what do you do for fun, Kelly? Tell us a little bit about your family and life outside of work. What are some things patients may not know about you?
Kelly Curtis: So for fun, we try to explore new cities. We have moved here a couple of years ago, so we like to go on all the road trips to New York and Philadelphia. And we've just been exploring weekend road trips to all the different cities, which has been great. And my husband actually works at the University of Rutgers. He works in the athletic department and so we watch a lot, a lot of games and we go to all kinds of college games there. And we're big into sports. So we like doing all the sporting events and everything like that too. And the beach is always great. So you can't pass that up.
Melanie: So wrap it up for us, Kelly. What would you like patients of the Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey and your new colleagues to know about your approach to working with them, and really just what you'd like them to know?
Kelly Curtis: This is a new field for me. I'm very excited to be in it and learn all about infertility, reproductive endocrinology, everything there is to know. I am very much a team player. I like to help others out, whether that'd be your colleagues or patients. I'm very excited to get started. I've been doing a lot of training and had become very comfortable doing all of the procedures in the office, that it's working with this team. The team here is fantastic. Everyone helps everybody out. Everyone is very caring. They provide an environment here like I've never seen in any other practice. It's very welcoming, so I'm very happy to be a part of that.
Melanie: Thank you for joining us and telling us all about yourself. That concludes this episode of Fertility Talk with the Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey. For more information, you can always go to fertilitynj.com to get connected with one of our providers. I'm Melanie Cole.
