Katie Fuchs, M.D. (Guest): What initially drew me to The Shriners Hospital for Children, I’ve wanted to work for this hospital system ever since I can remember as a medical student, about 15 years ago.

Hi, I’m Dr. Katie Fuchs. I am a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in lower extremity pathology of the foot and ankle, trauma and neuromuscular care at Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland. I rotated through the Shriners Hospitals because I knew I wanted to work with children and I particularly liked the Shriners Hospitals because it’s like this little Utopia where everybody can do the right thing, all the time and it’s all about the kids, my philosophy of care and I think it really aligns with the philosophy of The Shriners way of taking care of the whole patient.

I have an awesome team of partners here. There are 11 other Pediatric Orthopedic surgeons here and we cover the entire gamut, head to toe to take care of kids’ musculoskeletal systems. We have incredible ancillary staff here who also take care of the kids with physical therapy, we have recreational therapists. We have incredible equipment such as low dose radiation x-rays and this is a one-stop shop for taking care of kids head to toe.

My philosophy is also that just because you have an injury or a disability; it doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun and really learn about what’s going on. What the options are. I love talking to the whole family, taking care of the whole patient and deciding the next step in our care together.

One fun fact to know about me is that I really enjoy being outdoors. I’m a skier and a kite boarder. I came to become familiar with the Portland hospital because I am a kite surfer. I spent the summers in Hood River which is how I got to know the Portland area. I grew up in upstate New York in Vermont. I also play the ukulele and harmonica and as we speak, during this interview, I am a new mother.
