Enjoying Your Local Community

Transcription:

Tonya Stinson: Hi, this is Tonya Stinson. I'm the Director of the Farmington Convention and Visitors Bureau. We're a nonprofit organization with a contract with the City of Farmington to handle tourism and marketing promotion for the Farmington area.

My team and I are very passionate about growing and diversifying our economy through tourism, and we are excited about all the growth that's happened in recent years. We love our community and all it has to offer.

People love to visit places where people love to live, and having excited and enthusiastic locals makes our jobs easier. We need you to be Farmington ambassadors. We are all often guilty of not getting out and seeing and doing things in our own backyard thinking we have to travel somewhere else to having exciting adventures. So, we challenge you to get out and explore your own community and we'll provide you the tools needed to discover adventures that match your interests.

Okay. So let's discuss a few resources to help you be in the know. The first one is our website, farmingtonnm.org. If you haven't been on it, I highly recommend you check it out. Spend some time, and really dig around into all the pages. It's a wealth of information on all the things there are to see and do in and around Farmington.

Its printed companion piece is our Annual Farmington Vacation Guide. We print roughly 100,000 of those a year, and they are distributed all over the world. That's on the website. There's also a very robust calendar of events that's updated almost daily. And if you have an event or meeting that's being held somewhere in San Juan County, New Mexico, you're welcome to upload it to our online calendar. Just simply click on events and festivals and drop down to submit an event. It's really that simple and it's a free and easy way to get attention to your event as our website sees a lot of traffic to that page.

Other great resources are all of our social media platforms. If you enjoy Facebook, please make sure you follow Visit Farmington as well as Jolt Your Journey. Both of these accounts are also available on Instagram, if that's your preferred platform. Visit Farmington is our visitor audience facing account, but locals will find that info equally as helpful. The Jolt Your Journey platforms provide information to locals with messaging, not only about how to play here, but also how to obtain live and work information. Now, we live in a digital age, so make sure you're checking all of these resources often, looking for any updates.

Some of our most visited attractions are in our beautiful outdoor landscapes. Farmington really is a place where outdoor lovers and active families thrive. At this side, De-Na-Zin Wilderness is one of our top visited and most asked about attraction. If you've never been out there, I really encourage you to go. Our website has a lot of information that's informative and you'll want to read it before you head out that way, along with some really interesting videos. So it is a federally protected wilderness area. Trails to the unique formations are not marked, but you can stop by our visitor center and talk to my really knowledgeable team and they will make sure you are prepared.

Along with hiking other worldly places, there's mountain biking, offroading, fishing and many other area highlights that can be found on our website and in our visitors center, including trail information. Last year, we rolled out a printed trail map that highlights a few top trails in each user group, and then we direct you to our website for additional trail information.

Farmington also has experienced guides to help you more fully enjoy places such as Chaco Canyon, the Bisti, offroading locations, and rafting. So don't forget to support these local, small businesses. If cultural interest are more of interest to you, make sure to catch fantastic performances at places such as the Farmington Civic Center, Lions Wilderness Amphitheater, San Juan College, and other venues in the area.

And don't forget our amazing shopping found at our art galleries, trading posts, locally owned shops or the high quality museum exhibits. The Farmington area is full of family-friendly and affordable attractions, activities and events. There's always something to do or something new to discover.

I encourage you to use the resources I've mentioned today or stop by the Farmington Convention and Visitors Bureau. We're located inside the Farmington Museum Visitor Center at 3041 East Main. My team will help answer all your questions and make sure you leave with one of our beautiful vacation guides I spoke about earlier.

I hope I provided you with information that will help you get to know your community a little better, and that it encourages you to tell others just how much you love living here. Thanks so much for listening.
