Weight Loss Warriors: Inside Our Bariatric Surgery Support Group
Meghan Ritz: Hello, I'm Meghan Ritz, Physician Assistant and Assistant Director of the Metabolic and Bariatric Institute at San Juan Regional Medical Center. And I would like you to join me today as I talk about the benefits of bariatric surgery support groups.
Support groups are gatherings of individuals who share common experiences, challenges, or goals. Bariatric, or weight loss surgery, support groups offer a holistic approach to pre and post-surgery care by addressing many aspects of the bariatric journey for individuals who have undergone or who are considering bariatric surgery. Groups provide a supportive environment where members can share experiences, share information or offer encouragement.
There are many benefits of a bariatric support group. But here are my top five reasons why someone might want to consider attending regular meetings. Number one, understanding and empathy. Members of a bariatric support group often share common experiences, which creates a supportive community where individuals can express their emotions, challenges, and triumphs with others who really understand.
Number two, information sharing. Bariatric support groups provide guidance on adapting to necessary lifestyle changes for long-term success. Members can share practical tips and advice on issues such as meal planning, dealing with cravings, and how to meet daily fluid, protein and physical activity goals. This is a great way to also problem solve common challenges by using the collective wisdom of the group. Support groups often serve as a resource hub where members can recommend helpful books, websites, and local resources that have helped them along the way. Members can also share their post-surgery experiences. This information exchange can be helpful for those who are preparing for surgery so that they can better understand what to expect during their own recovery.
Number three, accountability, motivation, and mentorship. Regular interactions with a support group offers motivation and encouragement, fostering a sense of accountability for maintaining healthy habits. Members may set and share personal goals related to weight loss, physical activity and overall health. The group can provide a supportive environment to help individuals track their progress and celebrate their achievements. Individuals who have successfully navigated the challenges of bariatric surgery can also serve as mentors to those who are newer on their journey. This type of peer mentorship can provide valuable insight and guidance.
Number four, social connection. Support groups facilitate the formation of social connections and friendships. Members often find comfort in knowing that they are not alone in their journey. Support group social events can create opportunities for members to connect in a more relaxed and informal setting.
Number five, significant benefit on Short and long-term body weight Loss Studies show that participation in bariatric support groups can increase the likelihood of success for individuals in achieving and maintaining their weight loss after bariatric surgery. As a clinician who is driven by evidence-based medicine, this is the reason why I strongly encourage regular participation in a bariatric support group as part of everyone's treatment plan. This is also my top reason why I am so excited to be able to offer a bariatric support group here at the Metabolic and Bariatric Institute.
Currently, our meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the clinic site. We have scheduled topics for each month, but also allow for open conversation to meet the needs of attendees. We hope to host guest speakers, have a clothing exchange, and schedule in some fun social events like bowling or cooking demonstrations at future meetings.
I encourage anyone who has had bariatric surgery, whether here at San Juan Regional Medical Center or at another program site, or anyone who is preparing to have bariatric surgery, to come and be a part of this awesome group of weight loss warriors. Thank you for listening.
