Farmington 125 Time Capsule: When, What, and How to Join
Gina Intoppa: Hello, my name is Gina Intoppa, and I serve as the Integrated Marketing and Communications Manager for the City of Farmington.
What an incredible year 2026 has been, and we've been celebrating a big milestone in our community, but there's more fun to come. For 125 years, the City of Farmington has been shaped by the people who live, work, and gather here. From our early beginnings in 1901 to the vibrant community we enjoy today, 2026 marks our Quasquicentennial, a milestone built on progress, deep roots, and shared pride. While we've been celebrating this 125th anniversary all year, we're getting ready to host one of the most historic moments of the entire year, and we want you to be a part of it.
On Thursday, November 12th, we are gathering at the Farmington Museum for the official sealing of the Farmington 125 time capsule. This time capsule is truly a snapshot of Farmington right now in 2026, a story written by all of us. Inside, we are preserving items, memories, and milestones submitted by local partners across our area, including the Farmington Noonday Civitans, San Juan College, the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, Farmington Municipal Schools, the Desk and Derrick Club, and San Juan Regional Medical Center, just to name a few.
But what does it actually mean to capture a moment in time? It means preserving our daily life. What were our kids learning in school this year? What technologies, trends, and headlines defined our daily conversations? It means capturing our community spirit. What local events brought us together? What photos, letters, and artifacts reflect our traditions, hard work, and Southwestern heritage? And it means sharing our hopes for the future. What messages are local businesses, students, and leaders leaving behind for the Farmington of 2051? Together, these submissions capture our culture, our growth, and the heart of who we are today.
But this time capsule won't be hidden away. Following the ceremony, it will remain permanently on display at the Farmington Museum, standing as a living artifact for visitors and residents to see right up until it's officially opened in 25 years during Farmington's 150th anniversary in 2051.
So, what can you expect from this event? The Time Capsule Sealing Celebration kicks off at 3:30 with a live DJ playing family-friendly music, fun activities for all ages, complimentary refreshments, swag giveaways, and a special photo booth where you can capture a commemorative keepsake photo with family and friends. Learn more at farmingtonnm.gov/125.
When you join us for the event, you'll also be able to explore the museum's special anniversary exhibit, featuring then and now historic photo displays, showcasing Farmington's transformation over the decades.
Then, at 5:00 PM, we will gather together for the highlight of the day, the official sealing ceremony. Mayor and City Council have prepared formal letters to future city leadership, which will be placed inside the capsule as the final items before it's locked.
Guests attending will also receive an official sealing ceremony certificate, making them a witness to this occasion. Twenty-five years from now, when this capsule is unlocked in twenty fifty-one, people will look back on this exact day. We want you, your children, and your neighbors to be able to say, "I was there the day history was sealed."
So, mark your calendars, Thursday, November 12, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at the Farmington Museum. This is an event you won't want to miss. So, bring your family, invite your neighbors, and let's celebrate a hundred and twenty-five years of Farmington together. Thank you, and we hope to see you there.
