Crown Chakra: The Key to One-ness and the Universe

Deborah Howell (Host): Welcome to Stoughton Health Talk. I'm Deborah Howell, and I invite you to listen as we get introduced to the chakras and in particular to the crown chakra, which holds the key to oneness and the universe. So it's a rather important one to say the least.

Joining me is Amy Crull, a Reiki master teacher, yoga teacher, and holistic health coach. Amy, always a pleasure to have you with us.

Amy Crull: Thank you for having me. It's great to be here.

Deborah Howell (Host): So, you know, I think there have been times in everyone's lives where we've felt at one with the universe. For me, it's when I'm walking in the woods or swimming in a lake and I just feel so deeply connected to the earth and the animals and all of nature and beyond. That's why I'm really excited to learn more about the crown chocolate today. But to get us started, could you possibly give us a quick glance at the whole of the chakra system?

Amy Crull: Sure. When you actually define the word chakra, it comes from the Sanskrit language and it means wheel or spinning disc. And that is where energy converges at certain points in the body. And so you want that wheel to just be spinning nice and open. So, sometimes it can get wobbly, sometimes it can take on some baggage and things like that or physical ailments. And so, that's where a Reiki comes in and helps to balance that whole chakra system.

Deborah Howell (Host): All right. Now, let's focus on the crown chakra. Where would you like to begin?

Amy Crull: So, crown chakra, you got it at the crown of the head, so the top of the head. And there's a little bit of overlap between the third eye and the crown and that it also deals with the nervous system, the brain. But then it also deals with our muscular system and our skin and the pituitary gland. So right there, everything kind of in the top of the head. And then the color is purple, so that beautiful deep purple. Some people also, they'll see it as white, so either one works.

Deborah Howell (Host): Hmm, that's interesting. Tell us a little bit more about the role of the pituitary gland.

Amy Crull: So that's kind of the thing that controls everything in the body. So when we're talking about the crown, it is that oneness, that connection with something bigger than us, that surrender that comes with that. And that's the thing that also helps to run you. So pituitary kind of runs everything physically, and then this crown chakra just helps to run everything in your life.

Deborah Howell (Host): Beautiful. What else can you tell us about this chakra that makes it so important?

Amy Crull: Well, keywords for this would be inspiration, consciousness, oneness, this ability to surrender. And sometimes this can get a little off if we have very rigid beliefs or if we're cynical about spirituality, or apathetic, which believe me, many people have very good reason to do that. So, balanced characteristics would be open-minded, able to question, the wisdom that you gain from that, surrender, to trust, to believe. So it's really getting into that upper consciousness.

Deborah Howell (Host): Okay. Are there any key words associated with this chakra?

Amy Crull: Yes. Inspiration, consciousness, that oneness, that freedom, that surrender, that just kind of knowingness deep in your bones. But I think a lot of times that comes about by doubting, by challenging things. You know, what do I believe? What really do I believe and how do I connect? What makes me connect? Like you said, nature, that is a wonderful way, you know, because so many people have issues with how they were brought up in the church or whatever. So this is just a wonderful way for you to tap into your spirituality and what makes you feel that connection?

Deborah Howell (Host): And scientists would never get anywhere without skepticism, right?

Amy Crull: Exactly.

Deborah Howell (Host): Yeah. They have to doubt, otherwise they can't prove anything to be true.

Amy Crull: Exactly. That's their job.

Deborah Howell (Host): That's right. How can we connect with this chakra?

Amy Crull: So crystals that will help you to connect is selenite, which is that clear, nice bar of crystal. And that's just something you can kind of carry with you or I like to just take it over my head. It's a great clearing crystal just around my head. Clear quartz is great. And also amethyst, same as third eye, tapping into that purple color.

Essential oils for this again, frankincense. There's a reason that it's the Jesus oil, right? And lavender, peppermint, just some wonderful essential oils to help tap into your crown chakra. And for yoga, you've got shavasana. So you've done the whole practice. And then at the end, you're laying down and that's shavasana so that's just where you get to experience the wonderful surrender that comes after doing the poses, because that helps to calm the mind, because that is the goal of yoga is to do all those poses, so then you calm that chatter in the mind. So just to enjoy that shavana is wonderful.

Deborah Howell (Host): And then the rest of your day just seems to go smoother.

Amy Crull: It does. Just kind of like roughs out the edges there.

Deborah Howell (Host): So I'm hoping you have time to share a short meditation with us to help balance our chakra system.

Amy Crull: Yes, I'd love to. So just to begin, if you're in a seated position, you can put both feet on the ground, uncross the legs, if you have them crossed, just a nice way to ground. And then, you can place your hands on your lap, but let's do palms up. And then from here, you can just take some deep breaths. And I want you to just kind of put your attention to the top of your head, and then imagine this rainfall of golden light just coming down into your crown and it just starts to move slowly through your body. It's going through your forehead and then swirling around your sinuses. It's just this beautiful, warm light.

And moving down into your jaw, relaxing your jaw and into your throat, just kind of swirling around that throat chakra. And into your shoulders, into your chest and making its way into your digestive tract, into your gut, and abdomen. And it's like all the cells of your body are just open to receive this light.

And then through your hips, we carry so much stress in our hips. And this light is just relieving all that stress. And then, moving down into your legs, your thighs, your knees, even with knee pain, it's just kind of relieving that knee pain, moving down into your calves and ankles and then into your feet. So you might even feel that your feet are a little heavier on the ground. They're a little more grounded and then that beautiful energy is just going down into the earth. And then just take a few more deep breaths here. And when you're ready, you can open your eyes.

Deborah Howell (Host): Very nice, Amy. Thank you so much for that.
