Common Sleep Disorders, Risk Factors and Treatment Options

Host: This is the Summa Health Medical Minute. Today, we're with Dr. Kaetan Deoras, the Medical Director of Sleep Medicine at Summa Health. Doctor, March is National Sleep Awareness Month. Tell us why sleep is so important.

Dr. Kaetan Deoras: Sleep plays a critical role in your health by allowing the body and brain to recharge. Adults should get at least seven hours each night. Failing to get enough sleep can cause problems with concentration and memory. Long-term sleep issues can lead to serious conditions such as hypertension, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and depression.

Host: What are some tips for getting healthy sleep?

Dr. Kaetan Deoras: Limit your screen time before bed. Artificial light from devices suppresses the production of melatonin, a chemical your body creates to help prepare you for sleep. Maintain a regular sleep schedule. Limit caffeine, alcohol, and big meals. Keep your sleep environment cool. And get regular exercise, but not before bed.

Host: How do I get help for consistent sleep problems?

Dr. Kaetan Deoras: Talk to your doctor and ask if you should see a sleep specialist.
