Vasectomy Procedure Offered at Summa Health

Host: This is the Summa Health Medical Minute. Today we're with Dr. Kevin Spear, urologist at Summa Health. Doctor, what is Vas Madness at Summa?

Dr. Kevin Spear: It's a program we have where we do vasectomies just prior to and during the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Host: Have vasectomies become more common?

Dr. Kevin Spear: Yes, vasectomies have become more common over the past 10 to 14 years, and it's a couple's decision.

Host: Doctor, tell us about the procedure and recovery.

Dr. Kevin Spear: The procedure is done in the office. The person would need a ride. They take a valium prior, and we make two small little openings in the scrotum. We call it a no-scalpel vasectomy. We tease out this vas tube, which is about the size of a thick spaghetti, and we cut a segment out, burn the ends, tie the ends, put it back in. This will take a half hour or less. The patient goes home and basically takes it easy for the weekend, and they have a free pass to watch the tournament.
