Discover How Lung Conditions and Obesity are Connected and the Care available to Those Who are Affected

Host: I'm here with Dr. Mansur Assaad from Summa Health. What are some of the lung issues someone can experience who has obesity?

Mansur Assaad, MD: There's certainly a lot of overlap between obesity and several pulmonary diseases. Excess body weight substantially alters the mechanics of the lungs and chest wall and this can contribute significantly to the development of asthma, obstructive sleep apnea, the obesity hypoventilation syndrome, and even pulmonary hypertension.

Host: How does Summa help patients who may be experiencing both lung and obesity issues?

Mansur Assaad, MD: The Summa Health Weight Management Institute was founded in 2004 and provides a multidisciplinary team based approach to weight loss. Since obesity is a risk factor for several pulmonary diseases, it makes sense that weight loss is also a significant component of any patient's treatment plan.

As Summa physicians, we can help by arranging timely referral to the weight loss center to discuss any medical and or surgical options that best fits the patient's needs.
