Medical Minute: What is Palliative Care?

Host: This is the Summa Health Medical Minute. Today, we're with Dr. Kyle Yoder, Medical Director of Palliative and Hospice Care at Summa Health. Doctor, what is palliative care?

Dr. Kyle Yoder: Palliative care is specialized treatment focused on providing relief from symptoms and stress for those suffering from a serious illness. Its primary goal is to improve the quality of life for patients, their families, and caregivers.

Host: And what are the benefits of palliative care?

Dr. Kyle Yoder: Palliative care provides a holistic approach to medical treatment for a patient at any stage of a serious illness. It can be provided in many sites of care, including hospitals, medical offices, nursing homes, and a patient's own home. It focuses on ensuring a patient's preferences are respected and seeks to provide resources and support for families and caregivers.

Host: How are palliative and hospice care different?

Dr. Kyle Yoder: Both focus on improving a patient's quality of life. However, palliative care can begin as early as first diagnosis when seeking curative type treatment. Hospice care begins when prognosis is limited and curative treatment ends.
