How does the CimaVax vaccine for lung cancer work, and what's unique about it? Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women in the U.S. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, there are about 221,000 new cases of lung cancer each year.According to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America, most lung cancer cases are diagnosed in the late stages, making it harder to treat.Recently, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) visited Havana, Cuba, and returned back to the states with the promise of a lung cancer vaccine. The vaccine, which is called CimaVax, has been researched for 25 years in Cuba and in 2011 became available to the public for free. The Center for Molecular Immunology signed an agreement in the spring with Roswell Park Center Institute to import the vaccine and begin clinical trials.Kevin Lee, MD, joins Melanie Cole, MS, to discuss the lung cancer vaccine, if it's effective and when the U.S. will begin clinical trials.
