Chew on This with Kim Barnouin: Heartburn Drugs, Lazy Americans & Snorting Chocolate

Dr. Friedman and Kim chew on heartburn drug dangers, lazy Americans and the new fad of snorting chocolate powder.

Heartburn Drugs Linked to Greater Mortality

Over 50 million people in the U.S. are on proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The three most popular are Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid.

According to a recent study conducted at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, these drugs are tied to a wide range of side effects including fractures, dementia, heart disease, pneumonia, kidney disease and death. Research shows PPIs may shorten the protective chromosome ends known as telomeres, which means a shorter lifespan.

USA Ranks as One of the World's Laziest Countries

A recent USA Today headline reads: "The U.S. is one of the world's laziest countries — and it's making us fat!"

That’s among the findings of a study by Stanford University researchers that tracked the walking activity of 700,000 people in 46 countries around the world. The least lazy, according to this study, are the Chinese, particularly those in Hong Kong, where people average 2,000 more steps per day than Americans.

America ranks fourth from the bottom of all the 46 countries they researched. We live in a nation of couch potatoes, computer workers and video gamers.

Snorting Chocolate is the Latest Fad

The latest health fad is snorting chocolate powder! Why eat your chocolate when you can snort it up your nose like cocaine!?

For $24.99 you can get a 10-serving tin of Coco Loko, a cacao-based powder that you snort. According to the company website, snorting cocoa with a few other added herbs brings a feeling euphoria and a serotonin increase that elevates your mood to a point of ecstasy.

It's quite common for females to refer to chocolate as orgasmic, but that takes things to a new level.
