Deborah Serani, PhD, descended into a debilitating depression as a teenager, attempting suicide at age 19. The fallout from this major depressive episode required her to take a medical leave from college in order to recover. Crediting psychotherapy as life-saving, Serani directed her focus to the field of psychology and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from Hofstra University in 1982, a Doctorate in Psychology from the Ferkauf School at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1989, and a Post-Doctoral Certificate in Psychoanalysis from the Derner institute at Adelphi University in 2002.

She has become a go-to media expert on a variety of psychological issues. Her interviews can be found via ABC News, Newsday, Women’s Health & Fitness, Chicago Sun Times, The Associated Press, and affiliate radio station programs at CBS and NPR, just to name a few. She is a ShareCare Expert for Dr. Oz, writes for Psychology Today, helms the "Ask the Therapist" column for Esperanza Magazine and has worked as a technical advisor for the NBC television show, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. A licensed psychologist in practice over twenty years, Serani is also an adjunct professor at Adelphi University and author of the award-winning book, Living with Depression (Rowman & Littlefield).
