Seaweed is a multi-cellular algae that grows and lives in the sea or on rocks below a high-water mark. Seaweed lives in oceans, rivers, lakes and ponds.
Even though the green and slimy characteristics of algae may gross you out while you're swimming, did you know it's an incredible superfood that you should consider eating?
Seaweed is typically eaten in Asian countries and is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants. It is actually considered one of the healthiest foods in the world. Recently, research shows it may help to fight a number of diseases, including cancer.
How does this link to prostate cancer?
Men in Asian countries typically have lower levels of diabetes and heart disease. Japanese men also have one of the lowest rates of prostate cancer in the world and are eating close to 20 grams a day of seaweed. This led researchers to wonder if there was a specific link to the consumption of seaweed and the prevention of prostate cancer.
Scientists from the University of Florida screened different species of seaweed and identified sea lettuce as having anti-cancer potential. They then extracted several compounds from sea lettuce and tested them against prostate cancer cells.
The scientists found the sea lettuce eliminated free radicals, while boosting the activity of antioxidant enzymes. This enabled the antioxidants to increase in cells, offering protection against DNA damage.
What else do you need to know about seaweed and the prevention of prostate cancer?
Dr. Mike further explores this study conducted by the University of Florida, the many benefits of seaweed and why you should consider adding seaweed into your diet.
