EP 1,005B - Chronic Loneliness

Chronic loneliness reached “epidemic” proportions in the U.S., even before the current pandemic.

Social isolation generates stress, which drives up levels of the hormone cortisol, contributing to depression, diabetes, sleep problems, a weakened immune system, and other physical and mental illnesses.

J.W. Freiberg or "Terry" discusses the social psychology and neurobiology of loneliness and connection, and the physical and emotional toll chronic loneliness can take, as well as offers strategies for identifying, managing, and overcoming loneliness, and changing the definition of loneliness.

Featuring:
J.W. Freiberg, Ph.D.

J.W. Freiberg holds a Ph.D. from UCLA and a JD from Harvard Law School. A former assistant professor of sociology at Boston University, he served for 30 years as general counsel to more than a dozen of Boston’s mental health and social service agencies. Freiberg is the editor of Growing Up Lonely (papers from the 2018 Symposium on Childhood Loneliness) and the award-winning author of Four Seasons of Loneliness, as well as two earlier books, Critical Sociology: European Perspectives, and The French Press. He is a member of the MA state bar and the bar of the Supreme Court of the U.S.

J.W. Freiberg studies chronic loneliness through the unique lens of a social psychologist (PhD, UCLA) turned lawyer (JD, Harvard). A former assistant professor of social psychology at Boston University, he served for decades as general counsel to more than a dozen social service agencies in Boston, a dozen adoption agencies, and scores of private mental health practices. In his new book, Surrounded by Others and Yet So Alone, Dr. Freiberg explores the impact of faulty connections in failing relationships, through the telling of real case stories mined from his 30-years as an attorney. Dr. Freiberg is a regular contributor to the Attorney at Work and Psychology Today blogs, and he is a member of the MA state bar and the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States.
