UVA School of Nursing scientist Randy Jones will discuss a decision tool he developed to help prostate cancer patients make treatment choices. Created with support from a $2.2 million National Institutes of Health grant, the tool is a valuable guide for patients when starting, stopping, or altering cancer treatment.
Jones also talks about what conversations are important to have for patients like Biden and what advice he would have for patients beginning prostate cancer treatment.
Associate dean and professor Randy Jones studies health disparities, prostate cancer, chronic illness, and decision-making. He has earned funding for his research from the NIH, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and the American Nurses Foundation.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Nurse Faculty Scholar alumnus, and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) member for the RWJF Clinical Scholars Program, Jones serves as a NAC member for the AAN’s Institute for Nursing Leadership, earned the Southern Nursing Research Society's Researcher of the Year in minority health, and was named a National Black Nurses Association Institute of Excellence Scholar and a Fellow of its Academy of Diversity Leaders in Nursing.
Jones earned a BS in biology from Hampden-Sydney College and entered UVA through the School of Nursing's second degree program, ultimately earning a BSN, MSN, a post-master's certificate, and, ultimately, a PhD in nursing.
