Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects one in nine Americans (26 million people), yet only about 10 percent of U.S. patients in need of dialysis undergo home dialysis.
In order to live, you need to have healthy kidneys.
What are some of the symptoms of CKD?
Even though you may have symptoms, kidney damage progresses slowly so it may take you a bit to realize that you have CKD.
Some of the symptoms include nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, sleep problems, changes in urine output, muscle twitches and cramps, persistent itching, chest pain, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, and swelling of feet and ankles.
What are the treatment options?
The purpose of treatment is to help slow down and prevent further damage to your kidneys. There are different types of treatments, including hemodialysis, dialysis, or a kidney transplant.
What are the benefits of home hemodialysis over in-clinic dialysis treatment?
Peggy Depascal, RN, discusses chronic kidney disease and the different treatment options that are available.
