Bipolar Disorder in Teens

Pediatric bipolar disorder had been diagnosed more commonly in adolescents. 

Over the past decade, there has been more of a prevalence in both children and adolescents as the diagnosis has increased dramatically.

Diagnosis and management remain controversial, and medication is an important treatment, but adverse effects are common.

Pediatricians and parents should collaborate with child and adolescent psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals, when dealing with a child with Bipolar Disorder.

Dr. Benjamin Shain, MD
Benjamin Shain - 5x7 print resizedDr. Shain is the Head in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NorthShore University HealthSystem. He graduated Harvard College magna cum laude in biochemical sciences and completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, earning an MD and a PhD. Residency training was at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, New York University Medical Center, and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Board certifications are in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry with clinical specialization in mood and anxiety disorders, child and adolescent behavioral disorders, and psychopharmacology. Patients and family members appreciate his diagnostic skills as well as his humor.

Dr. Shain authored 19 publications, subjects including adolescent depression and bipolar disorder and adolescent suicide and self-harmful behavior. He has served in several professional societies, including his current role as the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry liaison to the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Adolescence.
