Aside from warmer weather and lifted spirits, what does Spring bring?
Allergies.
If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you know this all too well. The sneezing, stuffy nose, watery and itchy eyes... all can be brutal.
Spring isn't the only seasonal culprit. Spring allergies stem from trees blooming, but Summer allergies mostly come from varying grasses and Fall hits you with ragweed and other similar weeds.
On top of this, you may suffer from certain year-round allergies including those cased by pet dander, mold and dust mites.
If you suffer from both, it makes your symptoms that much worse. Not to mention that environmental allergies can be sneaky, especially if you move to a new part of the country and aren't used to the air quality.
How can you determine if you're suffering from allergies, or just a bout of the sniffles?
Doctors will often use skin testing, but you can also submit for blood testing.
What causes your body to react so violently to these allergens?
Your body recognizes things in the air (or in food in the case of food allergies) as an enemy, and responds in a manner to fight that enemy. This can include secretions in your nose and eyes and the mucus build-up in your nose. Your body fights this enemy just as it would a bacteria or virus. Oftentimes these symptoms are the first indication that you might have an allergy.
So, what are some natural ways you can fight allergies, whether seasonal or year-round?
Homeopathic treatments can be helpful. Many come in options such as a nasal spray, tablets or eye drops. When they work, they are quite effective, and they are completely without side effects. Homeopathic remedies can also be used in combination with other medications, including medications for asthma.
You can also practice "environmental control." If you know you're allergic to something outside, try not to go outside as much. Wash your clothes frequently if exposed to pollen and other allergens. In your home, utilize things like protective bed and pillow covers. But also keep in mind that these allergens can exist in your carpet, sofa, bed, drapes, etc.
