Tips for Building Bone Health

Even if osteoporosis runs in your family, there are things you can do to prevent it from becoming a debilitating condition.
Even if osteoporosis runs in your family, there are things you can do to prevent it from becoming a debilitating condition.

For instance, movement and exercise are key in addressing weak and brittle bones and preventing unnecessary fractures.

Also, vitamin D is crucial for good bone health. The best way to get bone-friendly vitamin D is via the sun, but you can also eat fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines) or take a vitamin D3 supplement.

Reed Davis, Certified Nutritional Therapist and Founder of the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN) Certification Course, advises the importance of these three bone-building supplements: vitamin D3, hydroxyapatite, and phytoestrogen.

You lose more bone when you don't have enough estrogen, which is why the photoestrogen is so important.

Reed also encourages a healthy lifestyle overall. Eat well, sleep well, reduce stress, and regularly perform weight-bearing exercises. Even just walking 15 minutes a day and looking around your surroundings can do wonders.

Listen in as Reed joins Dr. Susanne to share more about tips for building strong, healthy bones.

Reed has served as Health Director and Case Manager at The Better Health & Wellness Center in Poway, California, for over 15 years and now teaches a course in functional medicine with over 2500 trainees or graduates in 50 countries. He is also a Clinical Advisor at BioHealth Laboratory where he helps doctors interpret lab test results and develops natural protocols to restore function instead of just treating the symptoms. Reed lives in Southern California teaching the FDN Certification Course and helping his graduates to build robust, private-pay practices.

The purpose of FDN is to help people investigate and resolve the underlying causes and conditions at the root of their health complaints. Reed developed FDN so that it can be used by both licensed and lay-practitioners. He is certified in Nutritional Therapy by the International Foundation for Nutrition and Health (IFNH) where he is a lifetime member. Reed is a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer (IFPA) and Certified Metabolic Typing Advisor (CMTA).  He teaches only science-based methods of helping clients to rebuild health. Reed is a member of the A.C.E.P. as an EFT Practitioner and a member of the Pastoral Medicine Association. He supports many other health-related organizations and provides his own group with a weekly podcast, having an impressive archive of over 400 recordings.
Reed appears regularly on popular radio shows, podcasts and interviews, having appeared on over 100 programs. These include Underground Wellness' Blog-talk Radio, Hay House, KCBQ’s Total Health Line-up, Rebel Health, Bulletproof, HMBA and many online "summits" and teleconferences. Reed provides expert and entertaining presentations on balancing hormones naturally, bone density problems, digestion and detoxification, immune system health and the diet. He has also participated as a public speaker and guest lecturer in numerous conferences and events such as PaleoFx, PaleoCon, CanFitPro, National Association of Nutrition Professionals, CHEK Institute, Quantum University's World Summit on Integrative Medicine and others.

Reed is considered the "Columbo" of health and enjoys teaching practitioners to follow clues that reveal the underlying causes of people’s health complaints instead of just treating their symptoms.  By combining the latest technology and scientific methods with a holistic mentality, FDN practitioners help people overcome common health complaints and even serious conditions. While FDNs do not diagnose or treat disease, helping people identify and correct malfunctions can lead to vibrant health and vitality, even though that person may have been previously diagnosed with a medical condition.
