Sleep Secrets: Fall Asleep Faster & Get a Great Night's Rest

If you don't get enough quality sleep, your health is going to suffer.
Over 70 million Americans suffer from some sort of sleep disorder, and one out of three people experience a variety of insomnia.

This is extremely troubling, as sleep is the number-one factor for overall healthy and longevity, even over diet and exercise.

If you don't get enough quality sleep, your health is going to suffer.

How much sleep do you really need?

A certain percentage of the population can get by with six hours or less of sleep. But, most people need much more than that... eight, nine, even 10 hours.

What are some of the causes of insomnia and troubled sleep?

You may think of the typical culprits, such as stress, too much light exposure, eating too close to bedtime. But, food sensitivities can also cause a lack of sleep.

For instance, eating too much sugar raises your cortisol levels, which spurs an extra "alertness" within your body. Some people can have sleep-reducing reactions to MSG. Of course, caffeine and alcohol are also sleep offenders (even though they may not affect every single person).

Alternatively, there are also foods that help with sleep, such as cherries or tart cherry juice.

Ron Bazar, author of Sleep Secrets: How to Fall Asleep Fast, Beat Fatigue and Insomnia and Get a Great Night's Sleep, joins Dr. Susanne to share more of his sleep secrets, including what time is the best time to go to bed for a solid night's sleep.
