PTSD Can Impact Anyone, Military or Not

Typically, when you hear PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), you may think of military veterans who experience vivid and often debilitating panic-inducing flashbacks of their time at war.

With June 27th being National PTSD Awareness Day, a condition resulting in over 3 million cases in the U.S. annually, it's the perfect time to gain some clarity.

Dr. Sanam Hafeez shares some common causes of post-traumatic stress disorder and how to cope.

The month of May is packed with several Mental Health Awareness themes of which “National Anxiety and Depression Awareness Week” is the biggest.

Of these two conditions, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States. According to the ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America), anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults over the age of 18 or more than 18 percent of the population.

Even though there are effective means of managing anxiety, only 36.9 percent of sufferers are actually doing something about it. In fact, it is not uncommon for those with an anxiety disorder to suffer from depression or someone with depression to suffer from anxiety.

Benefits of Equine-Assisted Therapy

Horses are majestic creatures.

Just being around them is enough to give you a sense of peaceful relaxation. Those who own horses glean the stress-reducing benefits that come along with caring for these animals.

And now, even people who don’t own horses can experience therapeutic benefits through Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAP).

Your gut might be the reason you're feeling depressed.

The deep connections between gut and brain health are frequently overlooked.

It’s a fact that alterations in the gut microbiome can lead to a whole host of symptoms, including changes in mood and brain function. These trillions of bacteria are interconnected with the vast signaling and communications taking place between the gut, brain, immune system and hormones. The microbiome even creates many of the biochemicals the brain uses to process emotion and thought.

When the microbiome is healthy, your mood is lifted and you experience a deep sense of well-being that can never come from a pill. In an unhealthy state, it’s common for anxiety, depression, brain fog, and memory and concentration issues to pop up. For the greatest impact on brain health, look to the microbiome for the answers.

Depression & Family: Support is Needed for All

I’m not a gambler. In fact, I would be the first one to tell you that I would never last on the game show “Deal or No Deal.” As soon as the first offer was given, I would hit the red button and be done.

Yet, every day around 5:00 p.m. I find myself having an inner battle and betting the odds in terms of what I will find walking into my home.

You see, my husband has depression. Not the occasional, “I’m having a bad day” depression but the full-blown “I can barely function” depression, or as his psychologist and psychiatrist label it, “severe depression and high anxiety.” It didn’t start this way, and truthfully I’m not sure how we got here. I say “we” because while he may the one with the disease, I feel like I am the one suffering through it.

Your Brain on Exercise

It’s a fact. Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (43.8 million, or 18.5%) experiences mental illness in a given year, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health.

We also know how exercise is one of the best drug-free ways to improve mental health and wellbeing, and not just in the short term. Research has shown that exercise can alleviate depression for the long run as well.

But, just why is exercise so beneficial for alleviating depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses? What is it about exercise that makes it such an effective all natural anti-depressant?

The answer lies within us.
