Group Fitness Etiquette for Rookies

Learn the rules of play in the group fitness classroom so you can exercise with confidence.
If you're not used to a group fitness class, you might be nervous or unsure of the "etiquette."

But it's easy to learn the rules of play in a group fitness classroom so you can exercise with confidence.

Grace Desimone offers up the best fitness class etiquette, as well as what to do in awkward situations that might arise.





Here are are some of her suggestions:
  1. Check out a class before attending to "survey the scene."
  2. If you don't like crowds or if you do, you will know what to expect.
  3. Choose a class that's doable for your first class.
  4. If reservations are required, find out how that works.
  5. Arrive early.
  6. Let the instructor know it's your first class. Ask where the best spot to set up is.
  7. Let the instructor know if you have any physical limitations.
  8. Avoid the spaces nearest the door. Go to the farthest point from the door.
  9. Make sure you can SEE the instructor.
  10. Say hello or at least smile to other students.
  11. Turn your cell phone off.
  12. Don't talk during class.
  13. No gum chewing.
  14. If you don't like the class, politely excuse yourself and leave or work though it without having a visible attitude or temper tantrum.
  15. Avoid open beverage containers, but if you spill something, clean it up.
  16. Wipe down your equipment after use.
  17. Don't drop weights on the floor.
  18. Don't lean on the mirrors.
  19. In yoga classes, don't wear shoes in the studio.
  20. Don't wear street shoes or wet boots in the studio.
  21. Don't save spots for others.
  22. Stay for the cool down and stretch.
  23. Thank the instructor.
  24. Ask questions after class if time permits.
  25. If you are not feeling well, let someone on the staff know. Don't just walk out.
  26. If you had a miserable experience, let management know. They will appreciate your constructive feedback.
