What Can George W’s Stent Mean To You?


The Presidents' arteries, and what it means for you and yours.


George W had a positive stress test and received a stent to open up one (or was it more—we do not know) of his coronary (heart) arteries.

Was the stress test appropriate, and was the stent needed? Or could food choices have changed the need?

George W isn't the first President with arteries that show aging and plaque. Clinton's did. So did Reagan, and Ike and Harrison and Roosevelt's times two, and maybe every President. Just look at Obama's hair, or Bill C's heart arteries before he radically changed his diet and stress levels - or you can look at Ike or Harrison or - chose any President - it is a job laden with aging stress.

5- Hour Energy, Long Term Problem?


In its Adverse Event Reports, the FDA identifies a number of health-related adverse events in connection with 5 Hour Energy drinks.

Living Essentials, the manufacturer of 5-hour energy says it contains "about as much caffeine as a cup of the leading premium coffee." However, a recent test by Consumer Reports found that 5-Hour Energy contains 215 milligrams of caffeine per serving. In comparison, an average  8-ounce cup of coffee has about 100 milligrams of caffeine, although that varies according to how the coffee is brewed. Consumer Reports also finds that 8 ounces of Starbucks coffee is on the high side with 165 milligrams of caffeine.

So, it appears that 5-hour energy has up to double the amount of caffeine as a standard cup of coffee.

4 Powerful Relaxation Techniques


Here are the four relaxation techniques I spoke of on a recent show. Welcome Decker’s “stress countermeasures”.

Imagery (or visualization)

Imagery involves using your imagination to create a sensory experience of sights, sounds, feelings or taste that is relaxing. Imagery can help relieve stress, pain and depression; decrease side effects of chemotherapy like nausea; decrease blood pressure; improve sleep; boost immune function; shorten hospital stays; and speed healing. Guided imagery is when you use an outside person to help guide the images in your mind. It is sort of like telling you a story, but coaching you to “see” it in your mind.

Hypnotherapy (hypnosis therapy)

Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation to arrive at a state of deep, attentive, focused concentration, sometimes called a trance, that can make it easier for you to relax and to control your body and mind. Hypnotherapy can enable you to block an awareness of sensations like pain, discomfort, nausea and fatigue; reduce fear and anxiety; create a sense of calm; speed recovery; and promote healing.

A Message from AAP President Thomas McInerny, MD, FAAP, in Response to Connecticut School Shooting

Today is a day of sadness and grief for everyone who cares for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers its deepest sympathies to everyone affected by today's tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Pediatricians and other child health experts strongly recommend that schools and parents avail themselves of resources to help them talk with children about this disaster. As in any frightening situation, young children should not be exposed to the extensive media coverage of the event -- in other words, turn off the TV, computer, and other media devices. The AAP offers resources for talking to children about disasters, and advice on watching for signs of stress and trauma. Parents also can use their child's pediatrician as a source of advice and support during this time.
